I took a wander down to Albert Park and Middle Park yesterday. They're suburbs that back onto the beach in Melbourne, and are where the Australian Grand Prix is run.

I wanted to take a look at a couple of houses that were open for inspection. Unfortunately Melbourne is in the grip of a property bubble, and prices are somewhat irrational. A two bedroom place in need of some love was given a guide of $2 million! Bear in mind that this will be going up for auction in a few weeks, and the local real estate agents are renowned for quoting lowball figures. It could go for a lot more than that.

There is, however, another slight problem: The Guardian reported on what will get flooded in the event of sea levels rising. The red box roughly covers Albert and Middle Park! :o

However, I did get to see the Acute House, which has recently been completed. I've posted photos of it before (here, here and here).

The owner is obviously taking the threat of sea level rises seriously, as there's shark netting to keep unwanted guests off the balcony! 😉

I also saw a sign that is of no use to me: I don't have any hair, and I drink neither beer nor coffee! 😛

Like to see what they did with the interior of acute house. exterior looks like a set for Buster Keaton film.

I went to Portsea today. It's at the tip of the Mornington Peninsula, to the southeast of Melbourne, and is where millionaires have their holiday homes.

There was an old police training camp on the edge of town. I've got no idea what this concrete hemisphere was for.

It had nice views across Port Phillip though. This is the north side of the spit.

The super rich have a thing about gigantic basements. Anyone who's spent time in London will have heard of Iceberg Houses, and this appears to be the Australian version under construction. No, I don't get it.

It's about half an hour to the other side of the spit, and the sea is a bit wilder over the Bass Strait.

                                No wheelies on the beach!

A view over Portsea from the dunes at Back Beach.

There are some nice, mid-century houses in Portsea. These two are up for sale, and I'm particularly fond of the first one. The chances are that both will be flattened and replaced by something with less architectural merit.

Really nice, Graeme. The iceberg house thing in London is understandable given the price of land per square meter. Other than that I guess it's like a lot of things the super rich do. At some point the money makes you able to stop asking "why"? and start asking "why not"?
