Would you mind sharing these instructions?  My 08 is due for a wash soon and it would be nice to avoid the problems that some others are having.

How you wear, wash and enjoy this shirt is up to you, quite frankly, none of our business, but please check out the suggestions below.  They may help you avoid shedding a few tears.

1. Think very carefully about whether you need to ever put this in a washing machine.  Hand washing is by far the best.
2. Wash in warm water, no hotter than 30C (86F), with any mild detergent.
3. If you do want to machine wash, make sure the shirt is inside out with the buttons done up.  Wash on a gentle cycle.
4. Never spin or tumble dry.

If you machinewash, use very little soap… Even then you'll have to rinse (at least) twice...
