      @Qinhan nice watch.

Update from the Raiders of the Lost Deposit. Mappin & Webb now admit that they do have my deposit. But apparently it's non-refundable, though I was told it was refundable. They're out of stainless Geophysics, but I can put it to another timepiece from their collection.

I shall be having words with them…

      Fuck that…..

According to Mappin & Webb's own terms and conditions:

          Cancellations

Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations, you have the right to cancel your order with us at any time within 7 days of receiving your goods. In the event we are unable to deliver your order within our standard delivery timescales you are entitled to cancel your order with no penalty. Should you cancel the contract we will then refund you the price you have paid for the goods, this will not include delivery charge if you have cancelled after your order has been dispatched, also not a service provided by us, such as a special delivery service. You are under a duty to take reasonable care of the goods, which means the goods must be unused. Please contact our Customer Service Team should you wish to cancel your order.

So if they refuse a refund then they're in breach of contract. And since they didn't deliver a watch, they're also in breach of contract. 😉

Did they just assume you'd say "Aw, shucks.", and walk away from your deposit? Who operates a business like that, and stays in business? I hope they start doing what's right.

I got an email back from them today, and my deposit will be refunded. 😃

Now all I have to do is figure out what to get instead of a Geophysic…

                  Thanks @Tempvs.

The deposit was probably paid on a Visa debit card, but might have gone on my AMEX card. I'll have to find the receipt tomorrow to confirm.

On a slightly different note, there's a piece up at the Register on smart watches. Sounds like they're not too impressed. Then again, I'm an IT nerd and I haven't seen any point in them yet.

My wife is looking to get one, seems like a good idea for her. She keeps her phone in her purse and it's not always worth pulling it out every time it pings (and we both think it's rude to have your phone at the table during business dinners). Also useful when her hands are busy (i.e. minding the grand baby, pulling luggage, goofing with the dogs).

I won't get one, I'm too enamored with the romance of a mechanical watch, but I can see how it will help her out.

And while I loathe the idea of an Hermes version, she loves it, and I love her, so through the transitive law…

The Sub is a great watch. I like them on the bracket the best. Non date model has the cleanest dial and purest look to it.

Yep.  I love the bracelet too.

So many chances to make other hand jokes just missed.

Ben2t - I can highly recommend the Black Bay, but you've probably already seen my gushing on this thread. It's a great watch.

Qinhan - the bracelet looks best to me. I love the look of a really dinged-up and worn-in bracelet on a Sub.

@ben2t  - Your photos aren't showing very clearly for me but I gather the second one is a Rolex sub?  Love the "Blue Bay", by the way.

@Sugar Mountain - Any thoughts on preventing bracelet stretch?  I've read that using an ultrasonic cleaner to keep any nasty abrasive material out of the joints is the best way of ensuring the bracelet links stay nice and firm.
