      @Snowy:

      My 2011 MBP is in with the apple store. The display was going crazy greens/reds. It's out of all warranty, but being done under a general recall/replacement. $800AUD replacement for free. Any other vendor, and back in the day I used to do hardware/parts/etc, would say, sorry, that's natural wear/tear/usage of 4 years always on device. Apple goes, no no, it should last you more than 4 years, we're sorry our manufacturing wasn't up to par for you, and this isn't your fault, so we'll fix it for free.

      It's stuff like this why I stick with Apple. Some of their hardware/options are annoying, their service bar none, number one.

      the replacement program have been out for awhile now. thank god the petition went through. i had the same problem on my 2011 15in MBP as well. however mine died way earlier and i wasn't going to pay. however, the moment the replacement program came out, i was the first in to the genius bar to get it done.

        ^Yup, I've been aware of it for a while as well, but it got to a point where the flashing got too much. Plus a logic board replacement is basically getting a new computer. My case was full of cat hair (I tried removing a ton of it a few weeks ago), so the shell will be cleaned fully, and the logic board is replaced. Imagine it's then covered by another 1-3years warranty, like most of their replacements, which extends a 2011 product at least to mid 2016. 5 years on a laptop is good IMO.

                      @Snowy yeah it has been growing great. no problems so far. after getting it replaced, i upgraded the hard drive to ssd and everything feels so much faster. it feels like the computer had a refresh and could go on for another 2-3 years. so that puts it lifespan about 5-7 years, which is good. the only thing i'm lacking is a retina screen.

                      well, glad you got it replaced, as a side note, it would be worth getting it replaced even though the screen has not fuck up. that way you could sorta have a peace of mind.

                        So help me out here guys.  I'm out of warranty on my MBA, I bought it about 18 months ago.  The screen died in Thailand, but that's "all". If I plug into an external display I can use it.  You reckon if I take it into an Apple store, they'll do something about it?

                            You may check their website too. There are several active recalls for various products. I had an out of warranty iPhone 5 repaired for free when the lock button failed. They replaced the battery just for the heck of it while they had the phone open.

                                I'd book it and just take it in. They'll either do it for free or give you the estimated cost on the spot.

                                  You can take it to an authorized Apple repair shop as well. They usually have lower prices and carry the same warranty as if Apple did the repair themselves

                                    My MBP is back 1.5 business days. No cost, and working better than it was before service. It's had a good cleaning on the inside and out. The inside was full of cat hair that I couldn't remove, but after they'd removed the logic board, I think they vacuumed to whole thing clean. I love what Apple does. Turns a negative experience into a strong advocacy experience and I still love it!

We use MBPs for everything else, for a reason. My son dropped his iPad once (shattered, sha-dooby) and I went to an Apple store to by a replacement. I gave the "genius" the pieces of what my son dropped to recycle for me, and they took something like $200 US off the deal. How cool is that?
