You're the best Kyle! I'm really glad I picked them up now. It looks like the 3005-A just fades to lighter blues instead of white. Which makes sense considering natural indigo is involved.

    Those jeans look so good.

Compared to the regular denim, which has more of a deep ocean blue sort of fade, the 3005-A denim has a turquoise-sort of overcast.  The texture is also a little different, similar to other natural-indigo dyed jeans I've seen, but to a lesser extent, since it's a mixed dye and not all natural indigo.  That doesn't really show up in this picture, though.

        @grandmasterben:

If the warp is rope dyed then the denim will fade to white whether it is natural or synthetic indigo as the indigo does not penetrate to the core of the yarn.

Case in point, these are 100% natural indigo with a rope dyed warp:

If the warp in hank dyed (which often natural indigo warps are), then the denim will fade to light blue.

Ah, thanks for the info guys!  i love learning about this stuff.

@Cold Summer, do you know the percentage of natural indigo used?  Was it something like 50/50 or less than that?

And @Giles, rope dyed or not natural indigo will take longer to fade to white than synthetic, right?

It's been a while since my jeans were unworn, the the 3005-a already feel a little different to me.  They seem to be less of the classic stiff-as-fuck loomstate and are not as dark as my 3005 were.  But these are all things that differentiate them, so that's a good thing in my case!

I couldn't say why and I would LOVE to be proved wrong, but I just can't see flat head doing something like hank dying.  It doesn't seem to fit in with their aesthetic, somehow.  But then again, I'm also surprised they did 20 oz jeans.

It really depends how many dips the yarns got. how long they were in the dip for and how deep the dip is….My IH-666N took ages and ages to show any signs of fading, but once it started, it was like the indigo just gave up and they faded pretty quickly....

3005-a's presoak.  Really want to throw them in the wash but thought I'd get them hemmed first… I might give in though!

Ah man, those are perfect. Exactly how the 3005 should look!

I'm just afraid that once washed I'll be tempted to wear them and it'll slow down my progress of my regular 3005.

No clue how some people (looking at you Foxy ;)) don't go crazy from having an amazing denim stash.

Thanks sf, straight cuts are where it's at! I think you should look into the 105bsp if you want more rjb denim. Kyle is really skinny and his were perfect!

I'm looking to buy a pair of Flat Head 3002.
What are your experiences with shrinkage from those. Could it really be 1,5 inches in the waist and 3 in the length?
How much do you reckon the waist will stretch back out?

Flat heads shrink basically a whole size. 3" in length and 1.5" is exactly what you'll get if you wash them, and they'll go back to presoak very easily in the waist and give some in the thighs.

My recommendation is to get your jeans, wash them in hot water, and wear them for 3 or 4 days. If they don't fit then how you want them too they're not really ever going to be comfortable

                                      Hi Michael

My experience with 3002s, I've recently got myself a pair, is as follows.

I went for the 32, I'm about a 32.5 waist in reality. Pre soak it took a couple of attempts to close the top button. I'm not sure if that was the stiffness. They feel a fair bit heavier than 14.5oz in my opinion and regularly wear up to 21oz (SExIH01, RHxIH666 and UB121). I did the whole bathtub ritual, wearing them in a hot bath for 30 mins and wearing them until slightly damp. I found they stretched out to tag size on the waist pretty much from the first wear, I wouldn't be too concerned about the additional shrinkage. They fit a little snugger than my 1001 in the same size but nothing drastic. I've added a few fit pics and my bathtub ritual!

                                      Kevin

Oh and by the way LOVE them…..oh and Rivet and Hide just got a full restock on them last week, if you're not experienced with them at RnH, I can highly recommend them, they're great!

If the left pics are presoak, I think you'll be in trouble when you wash.

@grandmasterben the left is pre soak the right is post soak. I'm the same size in my 1001 and had no trouble but I suppose it remains to be seen. So far so good but it's s all a learning curve.

EDIT: top split screen pic is pre soak one side and post soak the other.
