Yeah, I have a much larger version that I installed a Bagjack laptop sleeve into as well. Their stuff is awesome.

Just picked up three Briefing Bags. So nice.
A briefcase, small duffel and large tote/camera bag.

Correct, backpack & ability to handle a decent storm/shower/rain are 'the' thing.

Sorry to hear that the Brain Bag has let you down @Snowy, I hope that you find a replacement soon.
Carryology have got a buyers guide up. It's still in Beta, and only covers backpacks, but it might help narrow the choices down, or make new suggestions.

The amount of times I've nearly pulled the trigger there or on a bag from Chrome is a lot :). Will give a bit more thought on their models, thanks.

Roger that, my daily has gone back to my Briggs & Riley ruck. It's so small but holds so much. Not then prettiest thing in the world but functional and rain resistant.

Check out the Bagjack backpacks as well. They look pretty good, are waterproof and expandable. I'll be able to speak to the quality in a few days when my NXL messenger arrives.

One of those rolltop Mission Workshop packs would suit that well I think.
The Mission Workshop Rambler seems to be an interesting design. It's a 22 / 44 litre expandable bag, which means it could work as an EDC and as a weekender. It'd probably fit @Snowy's requirements well.
I particularly like the Black Camo version.
The downside is that it's pretty heavy, and I'm not sure how durable the waterproof zips on it will be. Carryology expressed a concern about them.

@Graeme that's the bag I keep getting close to buying :|.
Things stopping me;
1)the laptop area is at the very front, and the materials aren't listed to define how waterproof they are.
2)On top of that, the laptop area goes right to the bottom of the bag, meaning if you place the bag down, my laptop's going to be whacking the ground.
3)I then need to come up with a solution for padding the pocket/bottom of the bag, that fits in the pocket that doesn't look too wide to begin with.Around this point it starts getting to be too much work for this specific bag, and I drift away

@Snowy couldn't you put your laptop in a neoprene sleeve, and slip it into the main compartment?
The sleeve would add padding, and the main compartment is weatherproof. That gets around your problems with only minor inconveniences.
Alternatively you could look at the Defy VerBockel backpack. It's not a dry bag, but should be pretty water resistant being made of waxed canvas.

there oron a bag from Chrome is a lot :).Stopped in the Chrome store while I was wandering the streets of Portland and the temptation was too strong. My custom bag will be coming in a couple of weeks…

(I picked up a couple of books for him at Powell's, so mission accomplished on that front.

I may be in the market for a new pack soon, and both the Defy VerBockel and MW Rambler would work really well, both have well thought out features, and don't look like the techie outdoor rucksacks that I've been using for the last 15 years.
Hard to choose between them, and I like to see bags in the flesh before I buy - I've seen MW in Condor Cycles, so hopefully they still stock them, but will need to see if the Defy bags are available anywhere in London
