@steelworker I think that there are two issues here.

The first is that the solutions to Global Warming tend to require government restrictions on behaviour. Those to the right of Attila the Hun consider any such impositions to be socialism. So I think that there's a cognitive bias towards decrying the research as being flawed.

Funnily enough, none of these critics ever seem to have a scientific background. 😉

The second is that significant changes in society tend to hurt the rich disproportionally, as new groups are likely to make money off it, whilst old groups lose it. So they've got an interest in maintaining the status quo, and moving to a low carbon economy is likely to shake things up.

Whilst sitting in the waiting room at a recruitment agency earlier, I flicked through a copy of The Australian. It's one of the main broadsheets down here, and part of the Murdoch stable.

PS all the papers here suck.

            So:

            • The papers and media suck.

            • Big business seems to blatantly dictate government policy.

            • The wildlife is lethal.

            • Everything is expensive.

            • The weather is too hot to wear heavy denim.

            • And I'm currently living in Hipster central!

Remind me again, why did I move here?

Adding to the climate change convo…I think anyone with half a brain could observe noticed changes to the Earthly climate. Most scientific papers I have seen confirm this as fact. My issue is where should governance fall in tackling the issue and/or is there an issue at all? I am completely in disagreement with most models on Anthropogenic Global Warming as they fail to address some key factors.

Namely that the climate has changed and continues to change on this ball of dirt, including periods where it has been MUCH warmer on a global scale (taking away merit of the utter doom scenarios). Secondly, most ignore data that shows we are observing similar changes throughout our solar system, hinting that the causation is much more likely solar in nature than our impact on the planet. The proposed solutions are also very broad in nature focusing largely on fines, taxes, and penalizing a naturally occurring element.

We certainly should focus on cleaning up the messes we've made, and air quality should be a major concern. However imposing sanctions on what is a basic building block to life on this planet is dangerous, particularly when we look at the track records of world leaders and how prone they are to abuse methods of taking from the people.

I believe @501/IH can add to the customs woes with his horrific tales of his dealings with berlin customs. what is it that they do that takes them so long to confirm that the piece of IH clothing, or something similar, that they are inspecting, isn't concealing a 100 ton consignment of peruvian flake !!!!!

Ratebeer's rating system is illogical, inconsistent and overly complicated.  Perhaps they were drunk when they created it, because that's the only way it wouldn't seem retarded.

But the ratings are right (I think) about Goose Island Halia; it's very nice.
