After travelling with a Tom Bihn Brain Bag for the past 3 weeks I feel pretty confident in saying that it's not up to IH level of quality. Bag smelt of plastic on initial opening, and has stuck with the bag for weeks. The zippers catch all the time, the Brain Cell (laptop protection) was annoying to get in/out and feels of cheap plastic. Most of the hardware feels of cheap plastic. The bag didn't hold up to a light shower; soaking the contents of my bag. The straps are way to freaking long, and I would tread on them at least once-twice a day. The sternum strap felt again, cheap, as well as never properly adjusting to be fully load-balancing/retaining.

          Would not recommended.

Wow, that is a real bummer and completely different than my experience with Tom Bihn. The Aeronaut and the Tristsar are my go to bags.

This fucking thing is sweet. 3A-5TS Mark II. It's made out of a laminated cotton that's soft but durable and water resistant. It has a velcro-in rubberized pocket to keep contents dry, and there's a pocket that has velcro on both sides so that it can get installed between the lining and the shell. This is perfect for sunglasses and other stuff. I added a laptop sleeve with the same property of velcro designed to install it firmly in the bag. There are also two exterior side pockets. The top cinches down with German special forces Kompression hardware. Finally, there is MOLLE webbing. I have added an EDC organizer pocket for pens, thumb drives, headphones, cables, etc., and a pocket for bike tools.

My 3A-1 stowed in my 3A-5TS so I can take it home from work. Lots of room in this beast:

            Compressed down:

Worn, it's super-comfy with perfect seating and balance. The adjustable shoulder and stabilizer straps are miracle workers:

            Think it, be it.

Thanks brotha, I'm so happy. A trip to NYC will be a good opportunity to bask in the awesomeness of this bag. The ride home from work wasn't bad either!

It used to be $80 flat rate to uk. The last item I bought from them though the shipping was about $46 when I purchased something from their sale

Decent quality. Made in USA. I like some of their designs and colorways. I owed a daypack about 3yrs ago but sold it. If one of the bags meets your specific use I'd get it. The bags with leather are really nice. They aren't as overbuilt as Goruck so just keep that in mind.

I don't know about hiking but walking 10-15 miles around the city it's very comfortable. Ask Jeff, he hikes with a GR1 and loves it.

Yeah it really depends on what you want for a bag. Will you strictly only use it for hiking or will it slowly be an all around bag? The Tad Gear Fast pack and almost any of the Mystery Ranch bags will fulfill your hiking needs but for traveling they might end of being too bulky. The Goruck GR1 is a happy medium.

+1 for the Goruck GR1, I've used mine daily now for almost 18 months and it is comfortable, manageable and tough as nails. If I gave it a clean it would pass as brand new I reckon. Plus they are great for travelling, mine has done Tokyo, Jakarta, London and it will be coming to Barcelona with me next month, the full length opening main compartment is super useful when you're looking for something in the bottom of your bag on a flight.
