Yes!!!!! What nerves the Dutch have shown. Steel is no appropriate metaphor.
Huntelaar does NOT have a good record in penalties at all when he plays for Schalke in the Bundesliga. The nerves….(not to speak of our nerves watching this....)
Congrats for Oranje to save themselves so late in the game. Can this get any more suspenseful?

Seul was pulling against Holland for the same reason I was tempted to pull for Mexico: Borderdom.

The officiating was very inconsistent throughout the game. It was "let em play" and then they tightened it up arbitrarily down the line.

Fundamentally, I think the penalty kick is usually unfair. It's so close that it comes down to the goalie guessing left or right. It makes the penalty for, in this case, a minor foul late in a tied game, almost a death sentence. Perhaps backing it up so that the goalie can at least react would make it a little more fair.

I was simply referring to the way that he leapt into the air and threw himself to the ground as if he had been choke slammed.

And before someone says that he should have had a penalty earlier in the game, poor officiating and blatant cheating do not cancel each other out. Feel bad for the Mexicans, they played well in every game and it's such a shitty way for a great player like Marquez to end his career and such a shitty thing for another great player like Robben to feel that he STILL has to do that (saw way too much of it when he was at Chelsea).

My sentiments exactly. Back the damn thing up. Give the keeper a sporting chance.

And while we're tweaking, no more games that end in penalty kicks. Just start pulling people off til someone scores. 11, 10, 9, 8, 7…..Someone is bound to score for too long.

Americans, do you see us Euro's telling your Grid Iron players to take the pads off and man up like Rugby players? No, well leave football alone then, it's been fine for the last 151 years and will remain so.

Jeez, next you'll be wanting it split into quarters so they can all have get together for a chat and fit more adverts in the televised coverage, or wanting people to run from the half way line to take a penalty.

(just joking before you get touchy about NFL  😉 )

Don't get me started comparing Baseball and Basketball to Rounders and Net Ball though (girl sports)  😉

Actually mega its a global game, and penalty kicks as a way to resolve a match are far from a long-standing tradition

Association football is an English invention  😉

The penalty kick has been around for a fair while too…

The invention of the penalty kick is also credited to the goalkeeper and businessman William McCrum in 1890 in Milford, County Armagh, Ireland. The Irish Football Association presented the idea to the International Football Association Board and finally after much debate, the board approved the idea on 2 June 1891.

I see what you mean about the penalty shoot out though…

Penalty shoot-outs were used to decide matches in UEFA's European Cup and Cup Winners' Cup in the 1970–71 season. The first ever European Cup shoot out was between Everton F.C. and Borussia Mönchengladbach, with Everton winning 4–3. On 30 September 1970, after a 4–4 aggregate draw in the first round of the Cup Winners' Cup, Honvéd won the first shoot-out 5–4 against Aberdeen, when Jim Forrest's shot hit the bar.

But it is better than it's predecessor….

Before the introduction of shoot-outs, knock-out matches level after extra time would be decided by a replay or a coin toss.

When football was being pushed in the US in the 70s (New York Cosmos, Tampa Bay Rowdies, etc), didn't they have some kind of shoot-out system to determine a 'positive' outcome for drawn matches, whereby players ran from the halfway line (or something) dribbling a ball and then attempted to beat the keeper? Or is this something I'm completely imagining?!
