Those are really sharp and I don't like engineers

They are. The only things I'd change would be adding an inch to the shaft (shut up D) and I think the straps would look better if they came to a point instead of being rounded at the end (an easy modification to make). I'm proud of myself for not jumping on these.

Every time I look at engineer boots they look more and more  appealing to me. I'd really like a pair of the himel/ace ones I've seen pics of. They probably don't get made very often, though.  These are really awesome too

Thanks, nothing specific done to soles, apart from some cream today, they've just gone darker naturally.

Thinking about it, they do get wet most mornings walking the dogs, so that may have helped them along.
