I saw Bush's (the second one) motorcade come through Austin years ago and it was quite the spectacle. The amount of limos, suburbans and helicopters was mind blowing especially with the northbound and southbound lanes empty.

Welcome to Texas Urbs, I look forward to grabbing some drinks with you! It would be even better if Chris could make it.

Just a quickie.  I will start a proper thread in the Sport section soon.

5 weeks ago, I decided to enter the Solent Swim Challenge.  That's a 3 mile open water swim (between the mainland and the Isle of Wight) in August.  It's in aid of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust.  I have just found out that I have been accepted  😉 😉

        http://www.ellenmacarthurcancertrust.org/

Given Paula's situation and the fact that I'm not getting any younger and am seriously unfit, I thought it would be a great thing to do.  And killing two birds with one stone, I can help myself, but more importantly give to people who need a serious cheering up.

Trouble is, I didn't really know how to swim, let alone do front crawl (freestyle) and although I am a pretty strong Scuba diver I am a shambolic swimmer.  I managed 300 meters the first time I went to the pool 4 weeks ago, all breast or back stroke.

So I have been frequenting the local pool and trying to get better.  I managed a mile in 46 mins (Paula did the counting, so no cheating miscounting was involved) on Wednesday.

I have a series of large challenges to come over the next few months.  And I want to raise a load on money.

I'm going to start things off.  Between now and the swim on 17th August we will donate USD5 to the Trust for every sale we get over USD200 - so, get buying you feckers.

And believe me, I'll be after all of you for help, every 10 cents will help  😘 😘

Good cause all around - good on you! Hopefully you can pickup the habit of swimming as a side-effect, it's wonderfully restorative.

You can count on a donation from over this way once it's set up.

Proud wifey - G is actually starting to develop biceps!  I got a kickback from our private medical health policy because all my (excellent) treatment has been through the National Health Service, so that £600 bonus is going straight into the pot.

Hopefully I'll be joining G with some of his training swims once I can (when I've got rid of PICC line in early June), he's not the only one who needs to get a lot fitter…

                🙂

With a lot of expenses coming up (more on that later), I don't know if I'll be making any purchases for a while, but I would definitely like to donate. Looking forward to the proper donation page.

Julie is reading the newspaper and just informed me that Texas is one of only 6 states that does not allow open carry of firearms.  I cannot adequately express my shock at this fact.  Texas does not allow open carry.

Correct on both points, Doug.  Nonetheless, that there are any restrictions at all on gun ownership and usage in this state is a surprise.

Isn't there a historical reason for it? Going back to the settler and new territory days
