I'm still with you on a classic, black service like the first pic. Viberg recommends the black oil tan and black CXL leathers as the two best leathers suited for polishing. The black CXL scuffs easier, FYI. Your call, I like them both.

Ahh sorry I think I'm understanding better the way this call to arms works. 

I like the CXL idea, scuffs or no. Also, it's key for the sole to be natural-colored so as to contrast all pretty-like with the black.

No worries, at all. The learning curve is all part of the process.

I think a service boot mixing rough and smooth out leather of the same tone would be cool. Rough on ankle support and/or heel counter, for example.

cant afford a pair atm, but an oxford in black r/o would be sick. pretty much the only build if prefer a vibram christy sole for.

a boondocker-like boot would also be awesome, but with rubber soles..

No more vintage tan roughout as far as I know. I think the closest thing is the copper task roughout, which is very nice.
