Reminds me of the little detail in "Raumschiff Orion" (a 1960 West German SciFi TV show with funky soundtrack) - it was so low budget that they put an household iron into the cockpit console of the starship to resemble a steering unit because of iron's futuristic design quality…

but than there are the side seams so it's more like a bag or case (for something strange, but what?).
plus, the way the strap/belt runs is awkward too.
