      Cheers for the advice SM but aesthetics have to come into play too as I'd like to wear them throughout winter in general as well, it's a big ask! Cheers.

          @EastWest:

          Hi all,  has anyone had any experience with the Danner Mountain trails or any Danner hikers in terms of waterproofing? I am keen on a pair, maybe the tanne left bank version for hiking and a bit of trudging through deep snow a couple of times a year as well. Do like the Vibergs of course but at half the price the danners look pretty good, any thoughts you could help with please?

          Cheers. J.

          I know it's been a while man but I picked up a pair of the Mountain Light Overtons recently and they're awesome. Definitely the best non-mocasin boots I've ever worn. Break in and overall comfort beats my Redwing 877s and work chukkas by a long shot. Durability beats the hell out of the crap Alden calls "boots." Can't recommend them enough. Amazon has some of the smaller sizes on sale plus a 20% off footwear coupon floating around. Came out around $185 shipped.

                  Thanks LN, Jeff and a bit of info Rafa, I ended up getting a pair of Viberg Hikers in the sample sale and although they were too big, was sold on looks, comfort (Sierra sole is like walking on marshmallows) and being built to hike! So ordered a pair a half size down, 8.5 240 last as apposed to 2040 last on the above pair, prefator leather, beautiful but unfortunately still too big! Now have a pair of 8's, built like tanks and after stomping round NY in them for the past 4 days, extremely comfortable.

                  I popped in Freeman whilst over the pond and fondled a pair of Danner ML's and for the money I would say they are superb, completely different boot from Viberg. The Danners are solid, much lighter in weight and I would imagine break in immediately whereas the VB's are aesthetically more pleasing (IMO), feel like they are built to flatten cities, take a bit wear to loosen up and as experienced, can be quite weighty towards the end of 10 hours of walking.

                  Both have their merits but if all you want them for is Hiking you really couldn't go wrong with Danner for the price tag.

                  Cheers.

                      Danner is the best because they have a classic look but are still technical. If you're really getting into it with a glacier and crampons you can find a better boot but if you want to day hike and then carouse around town after your descent, it's Danner.

                      Here's what I'd get:

                                    Either TTS US or a half size up. They run somewhat narrow for their style of footwear.

                                    I wear a 9.5 in Most US, 8.5 Viberg, and can do 9.5 or 10 D in these according to insole and sock thickness.

                                          Just sent my overtons off to Danner for a resole. Going with the vibram sierra in their mojave color. Should have a bit of a military look and feel. Hoping I get more than six months out of a set of soles too!

                                            I've got the Danner Crater Rim (Combat Hiker) and find it to be a great boot.
                                            Before I had it, I had some random Danner boots that my grandpa had given to me that were a size to a size and a half too small and were part of someone's uniform working at the prison before they got left behind. They were god awful ugly, and clunkier than hell… but aside from these seemingly deal breaker issues, they were a pretty good boot, and I wore them. Maybe it was that they were free, maybe it was that they were Danners.  Whatever it was, all things aside they were a damn good boot for how much I hated them.

                                            I decided to get a Danner boot I would actually like that catered to something I'd actually be using it for and bought the Crater Rim. I chose this boot mostly for hiking mostly but also just as an everyday boot to wear on mild winter days where there might be some snow or puddles that would prove the waterproof GoreTex lining to be useful.  They've been absolutely great for that, though the sole is pretty stiff to get used to for all day urban wear. At least for me it is, that is... Other than that I really couldn't complain about a thing.
                                            For fall days hiking, or just hiking in general, these boots are hard to beat and actually look good if you're wearing them out in the streets 🙂

                                            It's a shame I never wear the Crater Rims anymore. I have other boots and ended up getting some Danner Mountain Lights to take their place since that model comes in an EE width, more apt to accommodate a thick wool sock, which I often catch myself needing to wear. Perhaps I'll remember to update on those soon.

                                            It's been a long while since anyone else has though, everyone moved on from Danner?
