However, Clapton's taste in clothing is impeccable.  He is, after all, an IH customer.

Nice…. anyone ever think "Slowhand" is kind of a backwards compliment of a moniker for a guitar god though?

The nickname “Slowhand” was not, as is commonly thought, given to Clapton due to playing the guitar slowly.  Rather, it was given to him because of audiences giving him a slow hand clap when he would replace guitar strings on stage.  When most guitar players break a string on stage, a roady will typically bring them another guitar and fix the string on the old one off-stage.  Clapton, on the other hand, had a practice of standing on stage and replacing and tuning the string in front of the audience.  While he was doing this during one particular performance, the audience gave him a slow clap or a “slow hand” until he had fixed it and was ready to play again.  This slow-clap ultimately became a common thing with Clapton, while with the Yardbirds, where whenever he’d break a string during a performance, the audience would give him a slow clap until he was finished replacing it.  According to Eric Clapton, the guy that managed the Yardbirds, Giorgio Gomelsky, then gave him the nickname “Slowhand”: “He coined it as a good pun. He kept saying I was a fast player, so he put together the slow handclap phrase into Slowhand as a play on words.”

Eric Clapton…...  overrated.  Cream was good (and not all of it),  Derek and the Dominoes had Layla and Cocaine.  That's about it.

I forgot to point out previously that Cocaine is a JJ Cale song, and Clapton didn't really do anything terribly different with it, though his playing on it is terrific.

OK, I'm done oclasting that icon.

I hate tailor-cuffed flat-front slacks, and I hate uncuffed pleated slacks.  Actually, fuck pleats in general…

quick backpedal:  i'm not saying clapton isn't a great guitarist.  i like his stuff in john mayall and the bluesbreakers a lot actually.    there are other guitarists who i much prefer.  fully backing that he's an IH head though,  so maybe that changes my opinon a little bit.

I think that their Bond theme, "The Living Daylights" is one of the best ever.

Star Wars is the original trilogy only.  Everything after that is shit.  Star Trek is hit (Next Gen, many of the movies) and miss (Enterprise, Voyager, DS9, original series).  BSG is extraordinary.

I'll take the bait on the Clapton topic (and yeah, I know this isn't a music thread, but fuck it).

If Clapton had died after Cream, I'm pretty sure he would have remained forever in "legend" status. His stuff with John Mayal, Yardbirds and Cream was real pioneering stuff; along with Townshend and Beck he really pioneered the fat humbucker-through-Marshall sound. (Then Hendrix came and took it to a whole new level).

Problem is that EC undid a lot of his reputation by spewing out reams and reams of crap music from about 1970 onwards.

I dunno whether he's over rated or not, but without his influence the next generation of rock and metal would have been quite different.

By the way, I reckon Brian May's hair is cool. Go the Poodle Head!!

                                        Cheers
