Kit looks good and price is about right. A hand grinder takes about 2 minutes to grind a cup (about the same length as boiling water). I use a hand grinder and enjoy it, but it's not common to grind by hand (you really work for a cup).

Other option is to find a local coffee shop and ask them to grind the beans for you. Generally bean last for about a week once ground. The place in the city I source my beans from I get them to grind upon my purchase which they do without concern…

So if you are a slow coffee drinker better to grind as you go?

Beans are generally good to about 14 days after their roast date after that they'll start becoming gassy and taste rapidly goes down hill over the next few days.

Day 3-4 after roast = start of perfect
Day 4-11 after roast = perfect
Day 11-14 after roast = tail end of perfect

Each bean, the type, the environment it was grown in, how it was roasted (temp, time, and roast climate), all impact how good it lasts, but generally the sweet spot is day 4-11. So getting a cafe to grind beans that are a few days old isn't too bad.

With aeropress the scoop is 12 grams, a Long Black = 2 scoops = 24 grams. Thus a 250gram bag of coffee = 10 cups, which should fall around the sweet spot :).

So I picked up a Real McCoy's mug, it's nice/good, but it's not The Real McCoy in this case. Comparing against a Four Barrel (SF Coffee ~3 blocks from SelfEdge - Kiya's Fav 😉 ) the construction is totally different. The Four Barrel mug is the style of mug I got in most good coffee shops state-side, even some good diners.

My brother got this Nespresso machine as a present… I drink about 2-4 cups/ week... Mostly use the Dulsao de Brasil cap... Yes: I'm not as obsessed with coffee as Snow is  😉

Using French press and percolator mostly lately - got a cold brew pot from Hario Mizudashi but tried warming the coffee up and it was too weak, even after a 24 hour brew. Will keep it just for cold coffees from now on. Want to tackle pour overs next, and maybe snag one of those Italian Moka pots.

Will see how much interest we gather this week and will get a the bags sent out together (freshly roasted).

For those putting their name down, let me know if filter or espresso (it's fine either way, just want to get the right roast for you).

Hoping for White Horse Coffee, they have consistently amazing filters, fallback Sample Coffee, also consistently amazing more boutique tho, double fallbacks either Mecca or St.Ali/5Senses (this will come down to freshness). Dare I say a fellow Sydney IH-er?

What's the ratio of grounds to water? Do you just use a french press to strain the grounds?

Actually, you can use a French press, though I use this US$30-40 gadget: http://toddycafe.com/

12oz coffee grounds : 7 cups of water makes a concentrate that can be cut down by as much as half (cold milk or water, or boiling water for a hot cup of joe).  They say 12-18 hours, I just stick it in the fridge overnight, so close to that… Never more than 24 hours though IMO.

It's kind of a hassle, but you have a big jug of concentrate that lasts at least a week, two if you don't drink much coffee.  So hassle yes, but less frequent hassle, so I think you come out ahead, if you like the flavor of cold press.

                                            Think it, be it.
