You do not need to restarch them. The reason that the 21oz fades slowly is partly the softness, partly the weight and partly something secret we do to the jean post construction to retard the fading.
The 18oz is loomstate. It has had feck all post loom process applied to it. It is (even with the starch removed) stiffer than the 21oz. It is also slubbier which gives rise to high contrast.
Treat a pair of 18 and a pair of 21 in exactly the same way and you will get far more contrast out of the 18.
Fret feckin not.
How does this compaire to the 25oz. Fading properties G?

NerkG, the marbling on the 18oz is fucking ridiculous. When I was first getting into IH, I went to SE for the first time last December. I still didn't own any jeans from IH. There was a dude outside in a pair of 666S made of the 18oz denim. It looked like he had marbled lighting bolts all over his pants, it was epic. I asked what kind of denim and ever since that day, I've been waiting for the 18oz in a slightly fuller cut, which I got in the Vulcans. If your really into fadez, 18oz has way more character, IMHO…...(And yes, I've seen and touched both in raw and faded states)

Nerk, this topic has been covered a few times in the past, for example here:

As a regular wearer of both the 18oz and 25oz, I back the above comments. In a nutshell: get 18oz if you're after fast fading, get 25oz if you're after a suit of armour. They are both awesome.

hey guys, i'm really on the fence about these…..i'd love to see a few more fit pics if anyone is down to share.

Your wasting both of our time, that thread has nothing to do with my question. It's about what your favorite denim is. Was looking for a more technical answer for Giles. No disrespect to you.

From a distance similar, close up very different. That is due to the slubbiness of the 18 compared to the relative smoothness of the 25

21 and 25 oz denims are constructed in the same way. 25oz uses heavier threads to create… you got it... heavier denim. So 21 and 25 should have pretty similar fading properties. I think most of this has to do with the resin coating (to retard fading) which the 18oz doesn't have. So. 18oz=unprocessed, slubby, unsanforized, tighter weave - high contrast, sharp fades
21/25oz=post loom processing, sanforized, resin coated - thick bloby fadesor i guess you could just look at some of the hundreds of pictures of either denim and compare... don't you own both 18oz and 25?

I owned the 18 for a few days, no way to know how it behaves.
and my main question was about stiff vs soft denim, no matter which one it is. seems like the 25 fades nothing like the 21 , from everything I've seen.. I'm pretty sure the silicone treatment is not given to the 25oz. Giles could answer that only. But the combs on the 25 looks so much sharper and defined compaired to the 21oz.

will give these a test run to ensure i like them enough to do them in 25oz . . . to me the fit on the SBG is a little deceptive in my preferred size.
18oz or as i like to call them, IHs most interesting denim in its current line-up -
just joined the party. fit flicks when i'm able to get hoome with light out

Looking forward to it Monday. I have a pair in my stack.
