Looks like a nice job to me. At least now you don't have to worry about breaking your neck with the normal sole. They are flat out dangerous in the winter.

I will eventually send mine out to Alden and replace  with commando soles.

Yeah there's no way I can wear the old sole in NYC during winter or any rain.

I had them done at B Nelson's in NYC. It cost about the same as sending to Alden I think but I was expecting it to be cheaper, that's why I went there. They did a good job. They can do the actual commando sole exactly like Alden does but I got the lug sole instead, seemed more aggressive. I really like the white welt stitching.

405 are some great boots, not as beefy as White's but I find them to be the most comfortable.

snagged this pair of alden's for brook brothers shell cordovan for a good price… but the sole's quite bad. anyone knows what kind of sole is recommended to change to? and what products would you use to buff up the leather? obenaufs LP? saphir? kiwi?

Just brush each shoe real hard for about 5 minutes then polish with a cloth before you put anything on them.

Do not use any shoe polish on cordovan.  You will need very little (if any) cordovan cream to polish cordo.  Allen Edmonds, Alden and Saphir (i think) sells this.  If you can't find any, follow TT advice.  Use a shoe brush to brush them first and follow by buffing them with a clean cloth.  Cordovan behaves very differently than leather.  You will also occasionally see white residue on the surface, just buff them off with a brush/cloth.

As for the sole, if you are not planning to wear them in the snow / sleet, I recommend  J Redenbach soles.  These are the best of all leather soles.  They are built like a tank and will last you a very long time.  A little bit more expensive, but it is worth it.  Alden will resole them for you or if you are in NY, B. Nelson (as per urbanwoodsman) is highly recommended as well.

Just purchased L's Roy boots seriously beautiful and now the most comfortable boots I own. I guess I am a 11D not 11.5D.

Sole is very comfortable. Worn every day it will wear quickly I think. These may be my favorite boots.
