For some balance on the snaps vs buttons thing:
Snaps on shirts are quite a modern invention, they were [arguably] introduce by Wrangler in the mid 30's for rodeo riders so they wouldn't get hooked up by their buttons. They didn't really gain traction until after the War, so I think we can safely say that anyone who would have been considered a "proper Cowboy" would have had a button shirt.
Buttons work better with heavy weight materials than snaps do, would you want snaps to fasten your jean flys and try fastening a heavy leather jacket like an Aero with snaps only?

Well, NYC is famously international and cosmopolitan. The English and Aussie accents are basically the same. After all, the two countries border one another, right?
