So my brother's Passbook let him scan in his Walgreens card but now won't do anything but show the card.
Mine won't even do anything other than send me to the App Store
I don't understand passbook
Passbook isn't a stand alone app. It's really not supposed to do anything other than be a "wallet" for other apps. Other apps load cards into Passbook so you can use them in stores (via the on screen QR codes).
So, once you load the Walgreens card, that card is now ready to use. The store can scan the QR code attached to that card on the phone rather than having to carry the physical card. Your brother probably doesn't have any other passes in his passbook so that's the only one showing up.
The real issue is that Passbook requires infrastructure within the retailers that use it (devices to scan your phone). For instance, Fandango has Passbook support so you can send your ticket to Passbook and the theater can just scan your phone on entry. But not many theaters have that yet.
So if developers and retailers choose to use it, it could be cool.

I don't know how to explain it other than that it is total shit. There is a 45 page thread devoted to how awful it is on MacRumors. Examples of problems: awful quality satellite view; no streetview; directions are apparently a disaster; inaccurate; local towns missing or in the wrong place. Etc.
Them DC4 boys are surely wishing they had those 32oz peacoats:

Seriously - how many people have gotten themselves lost because of the Map app? It needs work, but really, who cares?
Rather they spend the time fixing the Podcast app anyway. That thing's been crap since day 1.

Continuing with the theme of apple maps, this article (http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/24/apples-smart-maps-maneuver/) makes some interesting points. While it is currently a huge step down from Google Maps, having their own mapping app puts Apple in a better place competitively…

Not cheap, but excellent quality and style I think. This is what I use for mine:

This is expensive too. So beautiful though http://palmerandsons.ca/macbook-sleeve-no-14

Hard Graft are not at all cheap. But…
They do a couple of bags that can be used in different ways. I've got an older 2 Unfold (brown leather and black canvas), which is the top image.
And a few sleeves.
If you're not bankrupt yet, there's always the boots.
