@tfar:
Simon, you might not need two yards. If the bag is 18 inches wide, 5 deep and 12 high, you need about 42 inches if you do a simple wrap-around design.
This is exactly how IH did it.

I didn't know that. Was just trying to come up with a simple design. For a not very highly finished bag, this is a one hour project. If you want to do something nice it can be a ten hour project. The IH bag has very nice features and looks good. At that price it would be almost not worth it to do it yourself unless you are in for the experience or want a different look or different features. As a first timer the result is not going to be as nice and you will have a hard time sourcing the 21oz material. The material would likely set you back $60 altogether already. Add in an aching back and many mistakes and you are better off with the IH bag.

Well, let's not get carried away. It is not "Exactly" how they did it, but it is a simple wrap-around design! I agree that it may be easier to buy the IH bag, but it will be much more rewarding to try to make your own, learn from mistakes, and theeeen buy the IH bag!

PS. I just copped a pair of virtually brand new W28 Indigo SEXIH03 Cyclist Jeans for $200 ! Yes, I already own a pair but "foldingsocks" was trying to get rid of his a couple weeks ago on SuFu. I PM'd him but he changed his mind about selling them. Now he contacted me again and I said "YESSSSS !" Well, he hasn't officially gotten back to me yet (he may change his mind again – I hope he doesn't). I LOVE THOSE Cyclist Motherfuckers ! He was nice enough to NOT post them on SuFu immediately and instead contact me directly first.

Nice Shubs, glad you got your hands on another pair of your favorites!

LandoCal, I gave foldingsocks my personal yahoo address. I'm ready to PayPal away (as a gift, how you taught me). Now I'm waiting for him to send me an email. If he changes his fucking mind again, I'll be upset !
The Cyclist jeans are a collector's item…and I LOVE them. I love how they look on markmont. He rocks those babies better than anyone. -
LOL Right on! Are you going to keep them on ice?

Did you ever use a sewing machine before? Those projects you are showing are intermediate level, not beginner's level. It is a great idea to get a paper bag first. But I would go one step further. Get some cheap trial cotton cloth. It is the undyed, unsanforized raw cotton, beige in color. That's usually the cheapest. However, sometimes you can find even denim cloth cheaper than that. It will pay to look around a little bit. When you have the trial cloth, make a first bag with all the features. Important: Take notes while you do it. There will be so many things that you won't remember all of them when you hit the real cloth. Then make a work protocol. That is a list of steps in the process. Even (and especially) seasoned pros do that.
Make sure you have tried out the settings for the machine with the actual material and that you have a needle suitable for that material with a couple of back-up needles. It is a whole different deal whether you are stitching two layers of denim or four. The thread tension needs to be different.
One particular challenge will be how to make clean edges. You can use edge band like he did in one of your links or you can hem them or you can actually line the bag (don't do that!). Edge band will be easiest but practice on some scraps first. We are talking about being off by not more than 1mm when you do the edge band.
It also really helps to have a good iron and iron the pieces and folds well BEFORE you start sewing.
Finally, don't set your hopes too high for it being an epic bag. It might well become an epic battle but the first bag most likely will not be epic.

-
not a biker rally (like the Bulldog Bash - used to go to that in the '90's), but a rock 'n' roll weekend - my dad loves that scene, we (my bro & sisters) are going for his 69th birthday.

Sounds Rad! Have a great time and we await photos!
