my twin bro just ordered a pair of 634S (wanted the SR but all sold - I think he will prefer the fit of the 21oz). Now my dad‚ bro and I all part of the IH crew!

Seriously, I would have walked out the minute that dude started shitting on things he obviously knows little about. Definitely don't go back there and show him a damn thing. Let him stew!

😕 i just want him to know how much he doesn't know. Call me immature but i hate it when stupid people refuse to believe they're wrong. SO frustrating.

Slow down there. You have plenty of time in life to try to prove things to stupid people as well as letting stupid people frustrate you. Pick your battles, life is too short for that. Instead, put that time into making that denim messenger bag. Trust me, when you are older you will be much happier that you put your energy into things of this nature. Who knows, maybe one day Simon626 will be a mogul of some messenger bag company? You are young enough to think like this. Cherish it!

LandoCal, I'm very impressed ! And you are so right. Simon-LA…pay close attention to what LandoCal just said. To be young, clueless and broke is a blessing because you have very little at stake, very little to lose.

One of my biggest regrets LandoCal is that I took a comfortable, easy path in life. That in fact, I didn't dream big and take risks. It's not about making $$. It's about finding a passion and pursuing it with a vengeance. Kiya is an amazing example of that.

Simon, you might not need two yards. If the bag is 18 inches wide, 5 deep and 12 high, you need about 42 inches if you do a simple wrap-around design. The sides will fashioned from the side of the cloth. You can even leave one selvedge edge running along one full side of the bag and make a selvedge edge shoulder strap from the other edge.

Think about velcro fasteners for starters. That will be the easiest.

Yeah simon, fuck that guy. Its a battle not worthy of fighting. And especially because u no longer have any business going there anymore. That douche is probably going to make a tote bag with cheap plaid lining and think he's re-invented the wheel. Just let them sink dude. Hate is baggage, don't sink with them. Swim.

This is exactly how IH did it.

I didn't know that. Was just trying to come up with a simple design. For a not very highly finished bag, this is a one hour project. If you want to do something nice it can be a ten hour project. The IH bag has very nice features and looks good. At that price it would be almost not worth it to do it yourself unless you are in for the experience or want a different look or different features. As a first timer the result is not going to be as nice and you will have a hard time sourcing the 21oz material. The material would likely set you back $60 altogether already. Add in an aching back and many mistakes and you are better off with the IH bag. 😉

Well, let's not get carried away. It is not "Exactly" how they did it, but it is a simple wrap-around design! I agree that it may be easier to buy the IH bag, but it will be much more rewarding to try to make your own, learn from mistakes, and theeeen buy the IH bag!

PS. I just copped a pair of virtually brand new W28 Indigo SEXIH03 Cyclist Jeans for $200 ! Yes, I already own a pair but "foldingsocks" was trying to get rid of his a couple weeks ago on SuFu. I PM'd him but he changed his mind about selling them. Now he contacted me again and I said "YESSSSS !" Well, he hasn't officially gotten back to me yet (he may change his mind again – I hope he doesn't). I LOVE THOSE Cyclist Motherfuckers ! He was nice enough to NOT post them on SuFu immediately and instead contact me directly first.

LandoCal, I gave foldingsocks my personal yahoo address. I'm ready to PayPal away (as a gift, how you taught me).  Now I'm waiting for him to send me an email. If he changes his fucking mind again, I'll be upset !
The Cyclist jeans are a collector's item…and I LOVE them. I love how they look on markmont. He rocks those babies better than anyone.

Well, I'm about to switch over to the indigo Cylists pretty soon. So, yeah…I'll keep one pair on ice and wear the other one as hard as my lame-ass pathetic little life will allow.

Did you ever use a sewing machine before? Those projects you are showing are intermediate level, not beginner's level. It is a great idea to get a paper bag first. But I would go one step further. Get some cheap trial cotton cloth. It is the undyed, unsanforized raw cotton, beige in color. That's usually the cheapest. However, sometimes you can find even denim cloth cheaper than that. It will pay to look around a little bit. When you have the trial cloth, make a first bag with all the features. Important: Take notes while you do it. There will be so many things that you won't remember all of them when you hit the real cloth. Then make a work protocol. That is a list of steps in the process. Even (and especially) seasoned pros do that.

Make sure you have tried out the settings for the machine with the actual material and that you have a needle suitable for that material with a couple of back-up needles. It is a whole different deal whether you are stitching two layers of denim or four. The thread tension needs to be different.

One particular challenge will be how to make clean edges. You can use edge band like he did in one of your links or you can hem them or you can actually line the bag (don't do that!). Edge band will be easiest but practice on some scraps first. We are talking about being off by not more than 1mm when you do the edge band.

It also really helps to have a good iron and iron the pieces and folds well BEFORE you start sewing.

Finally, don't set your hopes too high for it being an epic bag. It might well become an epic battle but the first bag most likely will not be epic. 😉

                                          Till
