Sheffield as in the town known for making knives?

I know violence is not the answer, I got it wrong on purpose

I'm just down the M1 from Sheffield, in Mansfield. The infamous engagement party of scum was in Sheffield, but it is mostly a nice city.

Yes Doug, it's the Steel City. I was quite impressed when you referenced the Vulcan on the top of our town hall, I must say. The city is built on steep hills with very fast, narrow rivers between them and these were perfect for the burgeoning knive trade in the 18th-19th century, as the waterwheels powered grindstones (made with grit stone from the nearby Peak District).

Last time I was back there, my fiancée and I bought a David Mellor kitchen knife for her mother that looked incredible. Given that my fiancée is from Hong Kong, giving knives as presents is not usually a good thing at all (as I'm sure you know) but the quality was so good, it passed.

It's so infamous, I knew exactly what you were referring to without the need to add the scum bit.

But, I do have to admit that "The infamous engagement party of scum" has a prosaic ring to it….

And Mega, my mum's side is from Farnsfield near Southwell so I've been through Mansfield many a time. Glad the engagement party didn't taint your impression of Sheff too much.

I'm glad that you had the good grace not to give your opinion of Mansfield, although I am aware it is an awful place, ha ha.

G, the night will live long in my memory, as I imagine survivors of other great tragedys relive their personal horrors.

I have a friend who was second in command on HMS Glamorgan in the Falklands war.  She took an Exocet and 13 men died.  He has never been able to talk about it and he is one of the most upbeat and funny men I know…...Funny how shit like this works.

I suspect though. I'd have rather been on Glamorgan in 13th June 1982, than at The infamous engagement party of scum

I would gladly have paid good money to see your reaction to the contents of that room, on that night G. Mine was a mixture of revulsion, bewilderment, and a macabre interest in the habits of the "people".

Oddly, the family of the groom to be (poor bastard), are really good friends of ours and really nice people. They were absolutely mortified upon meeting their prospective in-laws and associated hangers on. It made Shameless look like To The Manor Born.

Oh, but now that you've made it through, it's going to be the source of entertaining stories and pictures for years to come, Mega.  Totally worth it.:)

Reminds me of the wedding of one of my cousins, many, many years ago.  The groom, who turned out to be a giant douchebag that hit her, really blew it out for his bachelor's party.  So much so that he ended up arrested and my uncle (the bride's father) had to bail him out so that he could make it to the wedding- 45 minutes late.  I was only about 12-14 at the time, so I didn't get the full story til years later.  I just remember thinking he looked like hammered sh!t on his wedding day.

I have to go look for this as I don't remember the story.

You would think that behavior would be a big red flag!!!

Yeah, like I said, I didn't get the full story til years later, but apparently everyone hated him except my cousin.  She didn't come around until he started punching her.

It was probably good that he went to jail for a while; her father was a scary man who owned a small farm and slaughtered his own meat.  I think the son in law woulda had a shorter, much unhappier life if Uncle Jim had been able to do things his way.

+1, although I sort of like using Google translate on Boss Talk and imagining that Haraki-san writes in a cryptic, semi-poetic style when describing heavyweight denim and wabash…

                                            @Boss:

We've been lucky at Iron Heart, thanks to our customers that we were able to expand our line up so our customers can choose from variety of items that we produce.  In the past when I was to go to meetings I used to have to explain "21oz is 1.5times that of 14oz and its very sturdy", but these days I feel that we are well known enough that we don't really need to explain that.

That being said, I get asked often "what is Iron Heart going to make next?" or "Make something that is very Iron Heart like".  So, what should we do next?

Like cars, clothing that you want to wear changes over time.

The idea that we want to make great things, great clothing doesn't change.

We've got to step it up a notch.

I love this.  Haraki saying that Iron Heart is about quality and durability, but not a specific style or type of clothing.  As he changes, so will the products.  And we're able to go along for the ride, which is cool.
