I have wondered this quite some time?

Why do people buy motorcycle clothes, especially jackets when they don't actually ride??
'cos they look good isn't the answer I'm looking for.

Posers?? wanna-be bad boys? The image the black leather gives to others…(well, that is the bad boy thingy, I guess)

Please explain so that this simple soul understands?

Why do people buy deck jackets when they dont work on an aircraft carrier?
Why do people buy Everest parkas when they'll never go above the snow line?
Why do people wear board shorts when they can't/don't surf?
Why do I wear painters pants when I'm not a painter?
And I could go on for hours.

The simple point is that there is a point in history where stuff derived from, we steal the look because we like it/it suits us/or whatever.  Quite frankly it matters not a feck.

No group of people "own" a look, despite what they may think.

Same reason as people who don't, and never have skated wear Supreme, same reason as people wear running shoes with jeans, or logging boots when they're not loggers. Unfortunately "because they look good" might not be the answer that you're looking for IJ, but it is the answer.

And anyway, motorcyclists "borrowed" the look anyway:

"The classic motorcycle jacket really established itself not long after WWII. It’s at this point where the link from military flight jackets to highway style was forged. The ravages of war had taken its toll on some more than others, and many disaffected young men returning after the war found themselves unable to re-assimilate with society – they were lost. The camaraderie and feeling of belonging that came from being part of a military unit was wanting, and so, for some, it was replaced by taking to the road with other like-minded types, on motorcycles, and a new cult of highway style was born.

In the formative period of this culture the ‘motorcycle jacket’ per se didn’t exist. Only organisations such as the police had purpose made garments. For the young civilian motorcyclist a flight jacket was often the garment of choice – especially if it was his ex-service garment. (The ‘Hells Angels’ was the nickname given to the 303rd Bomb Group long before it ever became synonymous with the infamous outlaw bike gang. Aircrew actually painted the title on the backs of their flight jackets; it’s highly probable that this was the inspiration and source of gang's name). In the cult movie ‘The Wild One’ (1953) many of the jackets being worn by the tearaways are flight jackets."

                  Well, this beats me…LOL

I think I can understand the reasoning above.

Still, it makes me wonder....Black Leathers has quite steep "stigma" of badass, which the other examples of Giles do not.

Of course, if you're a badass...but then if you aren't...  you should be able to stand behind this unspoken statement.

(doh, it's rather difficult to explain how quite many see this, I think Nem can understand what I'm after)

Sorry to say, that's pretty much BS.

This is quoted from Schott's website
"Eager to innovate, it was no surprise that Irving Schott then set his sights on another American classic in the making - the motorcycle. In 1928, Irving Schott designed and produced the first leather motorcycle jacket. Retailing for $5.50 at a Long Island Harley Davidson distributor, the Perfecto was durable, rugged, and immediately embraced. To this new generation of "bikers," the Perfecto was a symbol of the excitement, adventure and danger that fueled their fascination with motorcycles."

I don't want this to become a peeing contest or flame war so I'll just let it be….

I see a lot of people wearing stuff that I think is inappropriate or shit or just plain wrong.  But all that matters really, is that they as individuals feel good within themselves and feel comfortable in their peer group.

There is possibly (probably, in case she reads this) one thing I have learned from my wife.  There is no point in stopping flogging a dead horse.

After WW2, the Japanese youth loved the badass way that the US GI's strutted their stuff in Japan.  And by that, I mean what they rode, what they drove and what they wore.

They decided to "borrow" that look.  If they had not, we would not have a Japanese jeans industry now.

                                          Full stop.
