That charcoal version is just amazing.. if I could think of a situation where I could wear it, I would get it:)

Thanks for the comments guys. Monday definitely let me know. Being in socal im torn between this and the solid ultra heavy flannel coming out.

I would say easily twice as warm.

It tends to retain heat a lot more than the flannel.
Walking briskly with this thing on will make you sweat.

I would actually say the complete opposite. I find that the IH medium to heavyweight flannel shirts are much hotter than the wool. There is a reason the IHW-01 is my favorite IH top, because I am most comfortable in any weather with one on. Just my opinion, sorry if I confused you. I just think this shirt is the most versatile shirt in the whole IH catalog, that is why I will be getting my third and definitely not my last!

I just re read that paragraph and it sounds awful, but hopefully you get my point. Too tired atm to correct it.

I think the fundament difference between this and the ultra heavy flannels is that this is wind proof.  On a fair day in January I can ski in this in the alps…...

It really reminds me of a thinner version of the classic norwegian woolen outer wear (vadmel) (http://www.feldbluse.de/assets/images/FeldbluseM40-1.jpg). Perfect for conditions like this: http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2011/035/5/3/winter_storm_iv_by_cainadamsson-d38aygt.jpg

Wool is special because it keeps you warm even if it is wet.  I wouldn't go so far as to call it water resistant.  But anything is better than cotton.

I find the Melton warmer than the flannel.

wind proof & water repellant sound good to me.  still not sure about it being warmer than my 20 (the only heavy weight flannel i have been able to wear when it was actually cold out).

i tend to wear my IHW-01 with another Iron Heart shirt under it & a tee.  my 20 i tend to wear with just a tee .  . . so it's kind of apples & oranges for me & hard for me to compare them since i don't wear them the same way.

one thing i think we agree on is you can't go wrong with a IHW-01.

drpat, i thought you were into being on fire  ???

Only part that really absorbed any was the cotton lining at the cuff

Price will be very close to last seasons price (USD375)

The price of wool has rocketed, but that crafty Haraki realised that this may happen and bought the melton wool last year to hedge against a substantial price rise….

Best IH Shirt EVER imo. Just sayin'. I am a slight breeze away from breaking one of mine out. Get it for night as it can be doubled as a jacket in warmer climates. Not to mention the fit on this shirt is too good to miss out on. I need Hunter Green, Burgundy, or Deep Purple next year!!!
