Bought an extra heavy flannel from UES at Mildblend here in Chicago a few months ago, love this thing. I try to wear it as much as my outfits allow, I feel like it fits best with the combo of some boots for that real workwear look, but I’m mostly a sneaker enjoyer.

@Beerhammer had a nice Ron Kirn signature custom Jazzmaster at one point in time, down to just two guitars now a days.

This is my main currently. 2006 MiM Thinline. All new electronics done by me some time ago— Seymour Duncan pickup set, new pots for volume and tone (split pot), black pickguard instead of the original white pearloid style, full contact input jack. Had to route the body cavity about 3/8” deeper as the ‘59 humbucker in the neck was too tall (has some stupidly tall legs on the mounting bracket for some reason.

Love this thing— it’s a Telecaster purist’s worst nightmare, and a dream for me (for playing in a very loud very chaotic screamo band)

@NickD thank you! Unfortunate that it took a tragic moment to spark that motivation in me, but I’m still proud of the progress. I agree to some degree that I’m likely overthinking, (likely some level of dysmorphia following the weight loss) but I just want to look spiffy in my nice jeans!! Might as well keep them going and maybe once that new relaxed straight cut releases I can pick those up to see if they fit the bill better. Got a few months of cold up ahead so time to put the work into these 21 ounces

@Xavras non-lifter, just genetically large quad and calf muscles. A blessing and a curse as a descendent of Polish farming families. Arguably an “athletic” build (although I’m in no way in shape anymore, just leaner than I was the past few years when I was 60 pounds heavier).

@meatmarketdenim1 based on the majority responses similar to yours, I’ll give it time and just keep putting time into these. I noticed the fit slowly change on my 14 oz 634s with 90 wears and 2 washes so far. Slightly different still as the cut seems slightly modified for the lighter weight. Hoping the bulging goes away, because besides that aspect I love everything about this pair. The weight, the fabric, the room in my legs so I can live and breathe, just the bit of excess right around the crotch, but as you mentioned, sizing down would likely destroy my jewels!

      Howdy all!

Nearing 100 wears on my 21 oz 634’s. Been noticing a lot of this streaky fading in the back of the crotch. Not sure if this means they are too snug (the thighs and top block are quite roomy) or if this is just a result of how the fabric bunches when walking/sitting/etc.

      Any reason to be worried?

@popvulture appreciate the experience based insight— unfortunately I don’t think I’d be able to size down. The rise already being under 11 inches at this size makes it tough, and obviously the thigh concern. From what I’ve gathered in my time browsing various denim, the consensus is that thighs don’t or don’t significantly stretch over the course of a pair of jean’s lifetime— luckily when I ordered these the IH team found a pair with a slightly more snug waist (33.8”) and larger thighs (13.6”). I’m looking to avoid any fits that are particularly slim on me, and even with the 634 being generally seen as a roomy straight, for my particular dimensions I feel as though they come off fairly slim (minus the bulging front). The difficulty comes in when I sit in these, as mentioned my thighs flatten and fill the legs quite easily, and my backside seems to “widen” so the seat is actually filled out when sitting. Already taken quite a few losses early on in this hobby, so I know how it goes, but unfortunately IH seems to be out of stock in any similar sizes in these at the moment 🤷‍♂️. Hoping they release the new relaxed straight soon, those seem like they’d work a little better for me down the line.

@Xavras very possible, my fellow countryman haha. The funny thing is that my father has quite thin legs for his size— he grew up in Gdańsk, where as my mothers side of the family came from the fields near Płock

@yannis appreciate the input! Unfortunately somebody had commented on my fade pictures and planted a seed of doubt in my mind. Saying that from the pictures (of just the pants flat) they seem “too small in the top block” when really I find the top block roomier than my 14 oz 634’s or my 19 oz Samurai jeans. I think it’s just the way the fabric folds around my thighs with certain movements and positions. The curse of thick thighs— the waist first perfectly, but for a straight cut they look slim on my frame haha.

Thank you again for weighing in 🫶

    • RE: Repairs & Modifications

@Jack haha fair enough. My only concern would be that due to the cotton thread, rather can creating a sort of end “seal” it might just cause the thread to be more easily pulled out with friction and wear. I’m quite the nit-picker, so I just have to not look at the inside of the hem until I forget about it.

Fingers crossed that they hold— would hate to start getting some nice roping fades only to have to re-hem and then create some weird overlapping patterns in the denim.

    • RE: Repairs & Modifications

@Jack appreciate the insider info Jack. My local shop uses 100% cotton thread, I assume this leaves the burn method out of the question?

As for finishing, I believe they just do the old school overlap (roughly 1.5-2” of stitch overlap) and snip the ends.

Chain stitch hemming, any cause for concern

      Happy New Year all!

I’ve been rocking my 21 oz 634s since the start of the cold season here, and after their first wash I decided to get my jeans hemmed as I wanted to go for a cleaner look on this pair specifically. Unfortunately, my local shop had some issues on the initial hemming which resulted in a skipped stitch on the union special, causing the chain stitch to immediately start unraveling as it got snagged by some friction on my shoes.

Since then, the chain stitch has been redone a total of 3 times (I want my iron hearts to look good and feel good!!!). In the below photo, I keep looking at these end loops left out after the final hemming (good otherwise, no skips). Is there any concern with these loops hanging loose? One is in the overlapped section of the stitch, but the other is at the end of the stitch I believe. I’d love to not have to take them in again.

Regrettably, I should have gotten them hemmed by IH when I first purchased them as I did not experience any shrinkage in length, and I would’ve much preferred the tied-end, Poly-thread that IH uses (my 14 oz are factory hemmed and have held up amazingly).

Any advice would be great, thank you all!!

@EdH said in IH-684S-16-GER - Iron Heart Germany 16oz Selvedge Denim Relaxed Straight Cut Jeans - Indigo:

Is there a story behind the number?

      I would assume a combo of 888 and 634

Larger in the “middle” (thighs and knees) hence why they probably but the 8 in the middle.
