@Filthy if you're after a retro pack, Rivendell Mountain Works have several that are straight out of the seventies!
The Tom Bihn Guide's Pack, Shadow Guide 33 (the smaller 23 won't fit a big laptop), Guide's Edition Paragon, and Design Lab Edition Paragon all play around with more classic silhouettes. They'll fit a 16" or 17" laptop, though I'm not sure if the Guide's Pack includes a sleeve.
Trakke do some really nice backpacks. The Storr is a travel design, with a zip-open front.

There's an REI store near me that has the ones Luke and Giles suggested and I want to check them out…. and if I don't like them I will probably order a Rivendell. I should hold off and decide what computer I am gonna get first. I'm leaning towards a Surface Pro so I can do Clipstudio Paint and Zbrush on there. I am tied of carrying around like 25 pounds of laptop and 650 watt power brick with me everywhere I go to not ever play any video games on anyway.

The wife and I each have one. Hers is the OG design from 2012. Mine is the slate one on the left. There’s some subtle design tweaks but basically the same..

@Brock yeah those are super nice. If they made one gray or blue with black leather, I'd be all over it.
If feel like your wife would like this t-shirt I have. I wouldn't ever wear it but I liked the art on it a lot. It's dye sublimation printed on a polyester shirt so it feels icky on your skin. But it looks cool.

Hey @Brock I wrote to them and requested them make me a charcoal Wilder with black leather. I'll bet they say, "we currently have no plans…"

Defy make the Verbockel in black waxed canvas or black ballistic nylon.
They used to do them in grey, but I think that colour has been discontinued. However, the newer models have a zip that runs up the middle, allowing for easier access (and banana peel impressions).
