I have done this with a pair of Annis, my advise is DON'T. You will not be satisfied with the result and then you will never wear them. Leave it to the experts.

5 years ago i oberdyed a old carharrt double knee with black by SIMPLICOL and the
Result was ok
The original colour was grey and i dyed to deep black!

Why not just buy some black jeans? So many great choices, 634sb, 666 OD, Superblacks, the coming SBG… even if you don't ruin your annie's your result likely will not improve upon what's already available.

I won't disagree with you, the technique and execution was definitely not optimal. I still think it is a waste though. Using Carharrt is fine (cheap) but IH is not cheap!

Yesterday I made a wash of my SR's, my 666, and fucked up the program, ending up with a full "normal" color cycle (60 degrees for 2 hours) and then someone in my house meant well by putting those in the dryer full cycle while I'd gone out for an errand!!! Anyway, the pants did not suffer, crease or lose color one fucking bit! They did shrink, albeit minimally, so all is good…

shocking the shrinking was minimal since mine shrank 3 inches in the waist from a steaming hot soak!
