One of my customers had a problem with his 634SR, so Haraki graciously agreed to overdye them.  They were overdyed with the patch still on, this is what happend in the overdying process (we did of course sew a new patch on)….....

        .
I'm still hope for new patch too….  😢

whats the difference between chain stitch and normal stitching?  the legs are too long on my SRs and i was thinking of taking them to nordstrom to get them done.

With my limited knowledge, not too much.  But if you were a die hard denimhead, it is all the rage.  Perhaps it is how the thread is sewn together and apparently it gives a better "roping" effect on the hem.  You can't chain stitch in Nordstrom BTW.  Chain-stitch requires specialize sewing machines.  SE/Blue in Green/IH UK and maybe a few other specialty denim stores in the U.S. can do it for you.  If you are just planning to do a plain hem, warn them that the SR (and in fact, all IH jeans) are super tough.  My seamstress broke the needle sewing mine!

              "normal" stitching looks like this..

it is the opinion of most folks that are in to denim that it just looks better, as you can see it has a thicker beefier appearance ..it is in fact a more authentic way of hemming jeans (old levis, lee, etc.)

not having a chain stitch  doesn't make your jeans suck.. it doesn't mean the hem will come undone or anything..it just may not look like it did when you bought them new and may not match the overall heavy duty look of iron heart jeans.. hope this helps..

ps. i just googled those photos i don't know where they came from.
and as far as "roping is concerned it is possible to achieve this affect with a normal top stitch but it is much more dramatic with the chain stitch due to the way the fabric is pulled during the sewing process..

now lets get back on topic..

THE 634SR IS STILL THE BEST JEAN EVER.

not to sound mean but i think not chain stitching your shuttle loom woven denim is a huge sin. which to me sucks.

chainstich is essential to roping, not because it's a superior stitch but quit the opposite as with everything desirable in a good jean. As all the machines became more efficient and refined the jeans became soulless…...... that is why brands like IH do what it does and thats why we love them for it.

I would fallow Haraki's instructions to the letter if I were you.  I soaked mine for at least 24 hours and still got some strange fading at first, it since has gone away.  Furthermore if you ever do decide to wash them, soak them a good long while first to avoid strange abrasion fades.  That has been my experience with the sr's.  That and the fact that no other jean I have ever tried even comes close to these once they finally do surrender and become your jawnz.

i did a hot soak (as hot as my bath water would get) over night with some hand agitation from time to time for my first soak, and hung them outside until fully dry. I was not confident that there was full shrinkage and so i did another hot soak overnight. the second hot soak made a big difference.

I found doing a second hot soak to also be very helpful with getting all the shrinkage out.
