Till, you look fabulous ! Thanks for posting pics up. No sweat about a few pounds too much…I'm sure a week in Paris is going to cause unseen bulges on me as well. It's all about being human.

The 634SR look good on you, and still very brand new. I LOVE the Stone Island jacket !

Thanks for the kind words, Shub and Giles. Yeah, the jacket is getting a lot of compliments, too, and I must say it is very nice to wear. I almost didn't buy it. But then he made me such a good price that I couldn't say no. I'm a good deal sucker.

Shoes are seriously wabi-sabi, indeed. The little spot at the toe is just some water from walking through the grass outside, otherwise they are flawless. There is only one discreet hint to how that color has been achieved. On the other shoe you can see a single darker line where the laces were covering the leather. Nice touch, in my eyes.

If I have time over the weekend I will take some shots with the 9634Z and perhaps pair it with the Aero Longshoreman.

As for the weight, I still have a 33 waist and weigh about 73kg (around 162lb) plus minus 1kg, on 180cm that is not too bad. But when I am 71-72kg I fit in all my suits again, so that's the aim because buying new suits is a serious investment and mine are all still in great shape.

          Till

Till, has the denim stained your shoes at all?  I really like light tan shoes but am not sure if I want to get a nice pair to wear with my jeans since I'm afraid they will quickly become discolored.

You can always put some electrical tape on the inside of the hems if you're concerned about that

The chainstitching is stronger and it will also give a somewhat irregular, bubbly hem. That's where you get what I'd call crown fading all around the leg opening.

You get a little bit of that roping with sanforized jeans and lots of it with unsanforized jeans. It's from the shrinking of the denim in one direction and the pull of the stitch in the other that gives you the roping effect.

                Sanforized jeans don't shrink much

Dr. Pat, absolutely no staining and no traces whatsoever on the shoes after several days of wearing both together. The leather is quite smooth and well waxed/polished. I guess that's why. And I wouldn't be afraid that would happen with other similar shoes if you want to get some.

When I wear my suede desert boots, otoh, I do get the staining and it is almost impossible to get out with just rubbing. Might have to soap them. But on the desert boots I somehow don't mind.

DougNG, excellent idea on the electrical tape and thanks for the explanation of wheat I called the bubble effect. Very good to know the real term and why it happens.

Just pulling your leg, of course. Comment or not.

I will post some more pics as soon as I get to it.

Yeah, no idea why they posted that way. They are showing up perfectly straight in my file. I didn't see any option of turning them. I'd like to avoid the sideways feature next time.

For all others, if you want to view them right side up it makes more sense turning the screen than the computer. 😃

                        Cheers to all,

Hey all. Just got my very first pair of IH (643SR). Any advice on breaking them in? I'm normally a 501 STF guy, so this is all new to me. Got my eye on the 9634 too, but can't decide. Love this forum. Been up all night reading it. Thanks.

First of all, congrats and welcome to the IH forum!

Well, if you've read the forum already you have certainly seen the 634SR thread. One big recommendation is to NOT do the wear till you drop and the crotch lows out thing while never washing it. Give it some good soaks in the beginning to make the material softer. Haraki-san's instructions do not require you to sit in the bath tub with it. But you could. If you don't want that but don't want them to shrink too much, do an overnight cold soak first. Dry flat, don't tumble dry. You can also wear them when they are still a bit damp to give them a bit more shape and get creases started that will settle in once they dry.

The hotter the water and the hotter the drying heat, the more they will shrink. Mine have about 2-3 soaks and 1 hand wash behind them. I will now wear them around 30 times or so before I wash them again. If I can go longer without "The Skunk" I will try to do that. Aerating them outside should help. I don't do anything special at all in terms of rubbing or wear.

The other thing you should keep in mind is that when you don't shrink them first and work on breaking them in while they are still completely dry and raw, the wrinkles will shift once you shrink them and that can look like dog. So, I'd say get them to your size first and make the material a bit softer. This way you won't blow out the seams and the wear marks will be where you actually want them. You also won't look badly dressed wearing oversized jeans for six months. 🙂

What tfar said…and since your coming from 501s...they're going to feel stiff for quite some time...raw, thick denim takes awhile to get used to 😉

And in my experience...Haraki's advice is to machine wash them with no soap when they're new to get some of the shrinking out of the way...I did that and got some really weird fading from the machine so I don't recommend that. Just hot soak a couple times

Machinewash with some vinaigre!.. No washing detergents though. Gets most of the shrinking out of the way, and it takes less time to dry. Put them on while they're damp though, to stretch a bit. Otherwise you'll have a hard time getting back into them. Might as well give 'm to your sis…

This weather is also perfect for some airing time during the night... Nothing like freezing weather to kill some bacterias (and thus clean your jeans)!..

I have a pair of sueded leather boots that have stained quite a bit from the hems of my jeans (I don't cuff too many of my jeans)

Thanks for the advice guys. I think I'll chronicle the progress in pics as I go along. Still can't decide if I should soak with them. Not 10 hours of course. But I'm thinking if I do several soaks in warm/hot water with them on - say 1 hour at a time, several times - and then wear them till they dry each time I may get something I'm looking for - the perfect fit. Am I being absolutely stupid? I can't friggin' wait till they arrive. Happy holidays everyone. Glad I found you all and IH.

I've done the same thing with almost all my jeans, hot soak for an hour, hang dry by the boiler (outside in the summer) and then wear...usually works out well for me
