Haha, thanks all.  I went back in to SFSE and tried the 33 back on and it felt fine.  I was probably just in my head.  Here is the fit with the 33s, still full in the thigh but I think the fit is good from the knee down.  There was no way for me to fit into a 32 either without feeling like I was suffocating.  I'll be getting them hemmed to 32 in for some double cuff action and these will be my labor pants.

For reference, my best fitting slim pants are my W+H Kyoto Blacks which measure at
            Waist: 17.7
            Rise: 11
            Hip Width: 20.1
            Thigh Width: 11.8
            Hem: 6.7

and I was looking for a slightly fuller, straight cut pant for bumming around/activities where I could lift up my leg and do things like the 888 which measures (according to SESF)
            Waist: 16.25
            Rise: 12
            Thigh: 12.2
            Leg Opening: 8.2

Edit - I feel set on this but as I scan through the pics of other users here, all of there fits look slimmer through the thigh.  Does it look like this is still fairly loose on me?  I have time to call to cancel the hem, but I don't know if a 32W would fit me in my waist…

They look a bit relaxed from the front but fine from the rear. A couple things to keep in mind: they will drape better once you break them in, and the waist will stretch well over an inch (I’ve gotten almost 2” out of the 21oz denim). If you want a slimmer fit through the thigh, unless the 32’s feel impossibly tight in the waist they will quickly stretch enough to be comfortable. If the 33’s fit comfortably in the waist when you first put them on, or if they’re just a bit tight, they will probably stretch enough to be too loose. The guys at Self Edge should be able to give you some guidance.

I think if you want a more relaxed pair of jeans then they are fine.

I would always advise sizing down if the other measurements work as the waist will stretch quickly.

Your call on how the other measurements feel on the 32’s.

I was able to cancel the hem and I'll be stopping by again to check out their widest 32.  The guy measured the thigh to be about 0.3 in narrower across the front which seems consistent with self edge measurements.  Ironheart measurements calculate out a 0.4 in difference.  I don't live close to SE where I can go every day, but I'm trying to generate a mental image for what it would  look like.  Could anyone postulate if that would visually trim down the thigh signifcantly?  It's anywhere between a 0.6 to 0.8 in difference.

                  Edit -

For reference and posterity for any future purchasers, I did a measurement comparison between between my previous jeans and known Iron Heart's Measurements -

I realize doing these quantitative measurements for a pair of jeans may be overkill, but I'm limited in my ability to go try them.  Anyway, after putting these numbers against each other and considering how I've felt in these different fits, I think the 32s should be the appropriate size for me in the thigh while giving me the extra benefit of a longer rise to have flexibility to do things.  However it seems like I'll need to put work into stretching them ~2 inches in the waist for them to fit comfortably (or lose weight, which is never a bad idea).

I'll update with more pics when I finally get my hands on them…

You can always ask the Self Edge guys to find a size 32 with a bigger waist, they might have one hat measures 32.5” or so.

Hey guys! First pair of IH's and first pair of heavyweight denim! Over the years I've gone through Nudie Slim Jims, two pairs of APC NS, a few months in Flathead F310s, and most recently a pair of UB201's.

I really liked the measurements on the 888s as far as a bigger thigh and higher rise compared to the UB201's. I'm posting here for a fit check, although I'm already two days in due to waiting for the IH forums registration.

This is a tag size 36. I'm 6' 1" or ~185 centimeters, 200lbs/90kg. The waist is just right for now while i'm standing and I'm hoping a little bit of stretch will make the waist a bit more comfortable

That is a great fit, jon!

The waist will definitely stretch, don't worry. You will probably see an inch of stretch and maybe even more. A hem would make those the perfect pair, I think.

Fit question for y'all – I bought a pair of the IH-888S 5 or 6 months ago at Self Edge in SF. I got them in my normal waist size (32). The waist fits well, but I guess I was expecting them to break in/loosen up more than they have. Specifically, the hip/crotch area is a little too snug when sitting or moving, and the side pockets are difficult to get my hands into.

So -- is there any possible alteration that would help? Should I try to break them in more? Or should I sell them and size up + take in the waist next time?

How much have you worn them? I’d wear them if the waist fits, the 21oz is forgiving and will relax a lot with use.

The only fix I could think of is using a jack to stretch the relevant area.

Regarding front pockets, they are relatively small with restricted openings on all IH jean models. Haraki-san appears to want them that way. There will be a reason why but I don’t know what it is. It bothers some people. I’m not one of them.

Thanks – I haven't worn them daily, but I'd say a few times a week for several months.

Hmmm… assuming minimal washing then there won’t be much more stretch left. The top block on the 888 tapers inwards to the waist band so if you’re wearing them low-ish then I can see how the fit could be like that.

I can’t see what kind of sewing mod could give you the required result I’m afraid.

In my experience, nothing cures a minor fit problem like wearing the fekk out of a pair of jeans.

Are you wearing them pulled up to your waist? The 888 is one of the roomiest top-blocks of any IH cuts, so I’m having a hard time visualizing how they would be tight on you (unless you have major lifters glutes and legs).

Anyway, like these guys say, 21oz stretches a lot—but it sounds like you’ve already gotten all the stretch your going to get. This cut may just not be for you.
