Trusting all your backup to a single external drive is a recipe for disaster, mate. Personally, I would supplement it with an off-site service. I use both of these and think they're both excellent:

No problem at all Mega.. The thing is Ive tried looking specifically for the one you suggested, i.e. silicon based for canvas(tents etc) but couldnt find one.
So was adviced by this guy at the store to try the one for textile *not silicon based) and so I did. Have sprayed once and waiting for it to dry a bit and gonna spray it for the 2nd time just to make sure.

Strange question to Finn and Scroogen, when you power up the hard drive does it make a slight clicking noise? If so, it is indeed dead.

no it sounds like a harddrive spinning when i plug it in…. my problem is that i plug it in and the lights don't turn on and it doesn't show up in windows. If it is busted then I don't feel ripped off or anything... just a shame i never backed up my shit. A whole golden age of internet thievery has been wasted
Here is my suggestion to finn. If you are using firewire, unplug that shit and use USB. My 'Mybook' seems to like USB and will actually turn on/show up/files usable it's just slow as .... well its as slow as USB will allow which is slow compared to firewire. Especially if you are on a windows machine give USB connection a try if it is an option on your model. Just switched in a USB cable in place of the firewire and it seems to be working now
I think the issue is in WD shitty firewire drivers and their absurd button and lights- Mine works with USB... transferring now just to be safe. Finn unless you bricked yours when you dropped it, i bet USB will work out for you *unless thats what you're using already
My external harddrive is about 7-8 years old now and seems to be chugging along fine on USB... ill leave the firewire to mac users!
