Random Rants

Wait, so you tell me black Friday is still coming up? I've already deleted dozens of mails on that topic…
-
Its the same as Christmas sales, firework night, Halloween…..all stretched out for weeks before and after
-
It takes about half a minute. I used to set-up an auto answering saying I was "away exploring Mars"… I reckon most of 'm gave up after that...
The less time and energy I have to waste, the better. I also find the idea that my not answering them and thus frustrating them endearing.
(I also love looking up people on Facebook and blocking them pre-emptively…)

I use this ethical search engine. I get f all black Friday promo emails, or any other algorithm based shite, and they invest ethically, and pay their taxes…
The only sales promo emails I get are Iron Heart, Rivet and Hide, Hennie Haynes, and Jura Watches. Because I subscribe. Other than that, the Internet can suck it. I don't have one single social media account. I don't even know what FOMO is!

Agreed on all this Black Friday and Christmas stuff. I love Christmas…. But it comes after Thanksgiving.
And I've gotten to the point where I basically boycott Black Friday. I don't do any clothes shopping for myself and about the only thing I'll look to see if there is a deal on is random stuff for my bikes (bicycles not motor).
We're borderline getting to the point where holiday sales start in the summer and 'Black Friday Doorbusters' start at like 3PM on Thanksgiving day!

In reference to Black Friday… Your online data profiles are weaponised against you, and other consumers. Use browsers that don't use data and share it with 3rd parties, regardless of your security and profile settings. The Internet WAS a force for good, but it has been wholesale hijacked
-
Well, it's being weaponized, but that article does not say it is against me. Call me simple, stupid, naive, whatever you want, but I don't particularly mind if data about me is being used to better target information to me. If I thought I was in the market for a fast Italian sportscar, I'd far rather have ads presented to me from Ferarri, Lamborghini, and Maserati than ads from Hyundai, Vauxhall and Kia…...
-
GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, and other legislation that serve to protect personal data much more stringently have been worked around so quickly, particularly across international boarders, that it is frightening.
I guess doing the job I do, and working across multi agencies for things like safeguarding, anti-gang strategies etc, I see how data can be used to profile and track people's habits and movements… Data collected under the guise of benign marketing and social media accounts.
I'd say that contributing occasional posts to the IH forum is as close to an online profile as I have, yet the odd rogue advertising campaign still makes its way to my inbox.

Agree, all the rhetoric of folks who want no tracking. For me I'm happy to give it up for more relevant info. GDPR is an absolute joke. Every website enforces (basically) accepting cookies anyhow, what a waste of fluff that piece of it was.

Firefox with uBlock Origin and EFF's Privacy Badger
Adguard DNS.Internet WAS great….
GDPR is better than nothing but 'legitimate interest' clause is a worry.
