always have referred to it as such (as everyone I have ever known has) and doubt it will change, but if you refer to it as northern soul i'll know what your talking about.  🙂

also known as "motown soul", or "motown sound"….

Actually I think the proper term for that music is just soul music. Northern Soul is specific to the scene is northern England. In the US we would just call it Soul Music.

Right , however, Motown is a form of soul in which Barry Gordy played "the hand of god" in crafting a sound that became synonymous with Detroit..

Also, if someone said "northern soul" I'd say "oxymoron" ha!

Of course, there are all sorts of subgenres of Soul Music usually by region: Detroit, Memphis, Philadelphia, etc. But to call all that music Northern Soul is just as incorrect as calling it all Motown. The term Northern Soul is rarely used in the States (where Soul Music actually originated). Here's a definition of Northern Soul from Wikipedia: "The phrase northern soul was coined by journalist Dave Godin and popularised in 1970 through his column in Blues and Soul magazine. The term refers to rare soul music that was played by DJs at nightclubs in northern England. The playlists originally consisted of obscure 1960s and early 1970s American soul recordings with an uptempo beat, such as those on Motown Records and more obscure labels such as Okeh Records. Modern soul developed when northern soul DJs began looking in record shops in the United States and United Kingdom for music that was more complex and contemporary."

Haha oh man, were an OCD bunch. I'm sticking with Motown, Its too ingrained to change, 99.9% of the population refers to it as such,  and most importantly….I've never been concerned with being PC anyways. Everyone knows what it means, or it wouldn't have even been debated in the first place... 😉

If there was anything good that my dad has given to me, than it was the love for music. I grew up listening to Barclay James Harvest, The Nack, Creeence Clearwater Revival, The Who, The Beatles and stuff like that! I remember nights my dad and me were listening to old records for hours. Then growing up, listening to Metal Music was getting more and more the main thing in my daily routine. Listening to Metallica, Maiden, Testament, King Diamond in the mid 80s was soemthing, not every kid was doing. I guess thats what I really enjoyed, not to be like most of the others.
Skateboarding and Metal was dominating my life for years! Then I started playing bass guitar and played in different metal bands until I met friends from Karlsruhe. They already had a Band which was called Man Vs Humanity. Their bass player Max quit and I joined these guys to pay in this amazing hardcore band. We did some shows with some of my heroes ( this goes out to Riffblastergeneral, maybe you can remember), the amazing CONVERGE which are still one of my favourite bands ever!!! Getting older and searching for music which makes me feel relaxed I would finally say, that I found my roots and got back to the music my dad introduced me too. Listening to Bruce Springsteen, Thin Lizzy, CCR, Terry Reid, J J Cale, Townes van Zandt etc. is still one of the most relaxing and inspiring things happening to me and my wife!
And this is one of my all time favourites

Seeing as that big soft bear D666 was apparently "thinking about" me when he made this thread, I better contribute. I'm not even going to try and "be cool", this is the genuinely the crap I listened to at very distinct stages of my life.

The first album which I ever bought, I was about 7 I think. No accounting for taste.

First band I got properly obsessed with and my introduction to real METAL !!!! My mother took me to see Europe when I was 10, she died when I was 11. They're laughable as a group but will always be special to me.

My first ongoing musical obsession, and from the greatest Rock album ever (imo), when they were good they were untouchable and they have never left my top 5 bands.

This band carried me through all the important shit you go through in your early to mid teens, sex, drugs and rock n roll. I lost my virginity listening to FNM, blazed my first jay to FNM, learned to kickflip to FNM, and got arrested listening to FNM. I saw them 5 times on 5 tours and they were Epic (pun intended) right until Big Jim got sacked off.

                                      Continued….

Made in England, clothed in Japan, fed in America and drunk in Belgium !

In my late teens I became a total "indie kid". Madchester was happening and we all wore baggy jeans and baggy hoodies with "bowl head" hair cuts.

This phase lasted a loooooong time, so it warrants 3 videos.

From here I began to "embrace my roots", and went all Irish.

Around this time (late teens/ early twenties), I rekindled my love of skating and the whole old scene including the music.

Possibly more than any other song, this song lyrically says more about my mindset from the death of my other to present day.

From here my music taste kinda mellowed I guess to where it is today. In the last few years I've gotten into some really great bands, I like bands who have something to say for themselves and make music with a point to it.

                                          So my final selections are…

                                          Honourable mentions to….

                                          The Beastie Boys

                                          Aerosmith (early)
                                          The Eagles
                                          The Soup Dragons

                                          The Beautiful South
