Agreed, it's a blemish on an otherwise great show IMO.

I fixed that for you, I am of like mind with Will Ferrel though too. I am the type of guy who mostly reads non fiction as well though.

Since we are sharing unpopular opinions though:

The complexities of country music (not the mod garbage) are often unappreciated by those who can't get past it's simplistic lyrical content. Flame away 😉

This will mean nothing to 99.9% of you, but I always found the association between country and western music, and markets at grim seaside towns in northern England in the 1980's unsettling. Every market stall used to have a cheap stereo rig playing very loud c+w music at Skegness market when my father dragged me there for our annual "seaside break" in the early to mid 80's.

I'm a huge fan of country. I hate modern popular country, but I'll listen to the outlaws and the old guys all day long.

There's country and western (the real deal) which is great and then there's the hat acts (Garth Brooks / Billy Ray Cyrus I'm looking at you) and then there's another level which is represented on this side of the water by the likes of Daniel O'Donnell, Isla Fisher and similar dredge. I assume you're referring to the last two categories Mega? If so, I feel your pain…..

                      Mclain,

I have just always received over whelming hate on the topic. From people in general, to other musicians, most of whom as I said can't get past lyrical content. There are a lot of average musicians who find their way into the genre sure, the same could be said elsewhere. However a picker like Brent Mason will never get the credit that a (insert guitar god) would, even if he is twice the player.

You're actually highlighting what I am talking about. I'll give you simplicity, and agree as I have before stated. Bright shirts, big hair? For all the rhinestone bullshit Glenn Campbell is a solid guitar player. 40 cigs a day voice? Merle Haggard in his sixties has more control over vocal tone than most kids in any modern genre. That period also produced the outlaws Mclain referenced, Waylon, Hank Williams Jr, and Willie Nelson (among others) who's Red Headed Stranger album is how a concept album should be done. How about the Desert Rose Band? John Jorgensen is a admired guitarist across the board when it comes to peers, but most have no clue about him due to distaste in the genre. I could go on, and I get it isn't your thing, but is it possible you missed something in all of that? The thread is unpopular opinions, and I doubt I will change any perspectives, but I will try like hell ::)

Or maybe a seaside town in Northern England in the 1980's was not the correct time or venue for a 10 year old to build an appreciation for the subtle nuances of the genre  😉

I hear you, didn't take all factors into account. I grew up in a house with such musical variety that I think I try to find something to like in all of it. People might come to my house and beat me up if I posted my list in the music thread. Not to say I don't like what others do, I just know how much heat I get for somethings I do like or appreciate. Likely one of the few on here that would advocate the most country of country in one post, and tell you of his appreciation for Yngwie Malmsteen the next.

i think you're underestimating most people's appreciation for music here.  as far as i'm concerned a person's love for music is a judgement free zone.  you dig what you dig, and if i don't dig it maybe you can explain to me how i should be approaching it.    sometimes it's hard to get around your own "filter" when it comes to appreciating something different and you need someone else's point of view as to why they like it.

there are a lot of people on this forum with extremely varied tastes.  if you come over my house you're just as likely to hear cheesy 80's pop, to afro beat, to no wave,  punk, metal (in all of it's forms),  j pop, to the every brothers, to miles davis, to fuckin field recordings of folk music ….    i'll give anything a try and always try to find something worthwhile in it.
