How tough are Darn Tough socks? The single issue I have with socks is that they invariably develop toe holes. I've had to throw out several pairs as a result and it drives me nuts.

@gaseousclay they have a lifetime warranty. All you do is mail them in and they send you a new pair.

But the toes and heels have some extra cushion, about 3 x the thickness of the rest of the sock. So they shouldn't wear out too fast. Unless you have raptor claws for toenails….

I bought 7 more pairs of the Darn Tough work socks with padding for steel toes yesterday, I liked them that much. I'm a full-blown merino wool socks addict now. They are so worth it!

From my experience, thus far, they hold up better than any other sock I've had before. I bought 5 pairs for work, a little over a year ago. They are worn with safety toed boots. Each pair is worn 1 day a week, and have a little over 50 total wears. Granted, this may be a somewhat limited sample. But, with a safety toe, I've worn through a number of pairs of socks with less wear. To this point, I've seen no evidence of any appreciable wear to the Darn Tough toes. While only more time may tell, I've got a great deal of confidence they'll hold up for very long time.

Thanks for the info. I do keep my nails trimmed, so it's not like I have gargoyle toenails  😃 I have 2 pairs of Beams+ socks that have held up with no toe holes, but they fit kinda tight. The added warranty with Darn Tough is a nice bonus.

@gaseousclay , another brand I've had a good experience with is Farm to Feet. 100% American made and manufactured, with the same lifetime guarantee as DT. Excellent quality.

I’m about to grab a dozen or so pairs of Darn Tough but a bit unsure as to which type to go for: is there some rule like ”the higher the merinowool content the better”, or are there unique advantages with their models that have only like 50% wool and the rest synthetics? I’m sticking in the lighweight to medium weight category and these socks will be mainly but not exclusively for warm to hot weather use.

Any pointers from those at a more advanced level of sockmanship greatly appreciated.

@Crit_Obs I've no experience with that brand but generally speaking a wool/synthetic blend means that the sock will keep it's shape better and be more robust, while retaining it's ability to wick moisture away from the foot. I own a number of Chup socks and my favourite for everyday, year round use are the wool/synthetic blends.

Yeah, cheers. Their plentiful variations are all blends and the percentages vary… Maybe my approach to this is overly OCD but I was thinking, does the variant with 70% wool serve exactly the same purpose as the variant with 50% wool, or are there other, more minute considerations I so far have failed to take into account...

Understood. I’m guessing now, but the trade off may be between warmth and durabilty? But you’re likely right that it wouldn’t make much difference.

@Crit_Obs sorry just saw this. Go for the non-padded for hot weather use. Lightweight. Been wearing Darn Tough work socks for the past too weeks and they are the most comfortable socks I have ever owned. I love them! Even when it is hot they aren't hotter than cotton and the don't slide down. Best socks I have ever tried.  I am inclined to say I like Darn Tough better than Smartwool after field testing them for the past 2 weeks for personal use and at work. The padded ones even make uncomfortable shoes more comfortable.

tough. my oldest prs are 8+ years and counting. i wear the light weight mid calf boot type. $20 USD.

I’d recommending getting a pr from REI or Amazon and trying them.

                          and damn Mike. nice scores!

Thanks for the reply, @Filthy ! I went ahead and purchased a dozen pairs of their lighter variety for the warm months and like them a lot so far. 😎

think i'll do that. I usually wear mid calf socks when wearing my boots and during the winter months, sadly every single pair of my Anonymousism socks got the dreaded toe hole. I have two pairs of Beams+ socks that have held up remarkably well, but those fit really tight.
