Thanks, 4c. I got hooked on the milk glass! The jadeite restaurant ware is super-chunky.

Hey, that's made here in Austin! It's not too bad.

I have a quick question for the more experienced coffee fans here.
My girlfriend recently got me a Chemex 8 cup and I love it.
Except for one thing: every now and then the filter seems to burst and it really pisses me off!
I've tried doubling, even tripling the filters used and it still manages to happen.
I'm following all the brew instructions from multiple sites, and I'm following everything to a T.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Maybe I'm wetting the filters too much?

Which filter paper are you using? I've got the pre-folded squares and never had a problem.

Yup, what filter are you using? Are you stirring the grounds at all during the bloom phase? I lightly wet the filter before the grounds but I never stir.

Nope, not stirring since I've been experiencing the the filters breaking.
I've been using the Melitta bamboo filters, that could have something to do with it…

I used the Chemex for a long time. Then I got a no name ceramic filter at the fleamarket and my Chemex filters were empty.
I bought some bleached Melitta filters to use the ceramic filter. After two months I got some Chemex filters again and I really missed the richness of the cup, which I got from the keramic filter. Since that I never used the Chemex again.
Last week I got the Kalita Wave and I´m happy with it. It´s not so easy to get a nice cup, because you have to choose the fineness of grinding very precisely. But if you get it, it comes out a clean cup with richness and a nice body. It´s really worth a try.

I like both, find the Chemex more work, but worth the clarity of profile to slowly enjoy over a weekend.

I drink a load of coffee, but am not particularly anal about it.  So this was all a mystery to me, but the coffee sure did taste good…

3 call outs whilst I should have been sleeping and not on-call for the week unless it's customer major impacting. Not a good start to the weekend. First few sips of coffee going on there.

Ended up doing a very lovely Rwanda Chemex to get weekend moving back to the positive. The world's not such a bad place after all!

Any burr grinder recommendations? Under $150.

Jeff gave me this coffee grinder for my birthday a couple of years ago and that's what I use daily. It's fine for myself but if I'm making more than one cup it becomes a huge chore.

I hear good things about the Baratza Encore
