I think I'm going to try to get the Grand Seiko SBGJ231 from Japan when it comes out in February. If anyone has a tip on how to obtain one of those (boutique only), I'm listening.

Are they allowed to ship? Might be worth calling a boutique and finding out if you can just order over the phone and ask if they would ship it to your location.

It’s lovely and in my «theoretical» price range. Not available outside of Japan?

The Tudor Black Bay Bronze Blue (BBBB!) is lovely but I'm not sure it's available for me in the US. We'll see.

Bucherer have just bought Torneau, so you might be able to order one in the not too distant future. 😃

Bucherer do a version of the Black Bay Bronze with a blue dial. It's only available through them.

                                Ah, the Mare Nostrum? 😘

I saw one in Selfridge's in 2016, and it was still there in 2017. It's one of the few Panerais that I'd like. Shame about the enormous price tag.

The new Montblanc 1858 Monopusher Chronograph uses a similar Minerva movement, but is smaller, cheaper, and greener. It was unveiled at SIHH, and Monochrome got to play with the prototype.

If that's too discrete, Montblanc offers the Timewalker Rally Timer…

I had the cream colored dial and liked it a LOT. Great movement, perfect size, very legible, and a real attention grabber. I ended up selling it only to fund IronHeart…. 🙂

What's your motivation for collecting, gents?

Bragging rights (Rare, or expensive watches)?
                                    Aesthetics?
Practicality (Easy access to the most accurate time possible)?
                                    Appreciation of the engineering?

I'm sure that for the four options I've listed, everyone has a bit of all for motivating them in their collection… But which one, singular point is your biggest motivator of the four?

im a little late but here's my story
i always wanted to wear a watch but didnt really like any, thought they were all too small and looked weird on my wrist
i then thought i had never had one nice enough and so i never really got attached, so i was on huckberry and saw a seiko skx, thought it looked dope, tried it and meh, still thought it was too small
then some politics happened in 2016 and i still reallllly wanted a watch and justified an expensive purchase on a piece of jewelry i could sell in a pinch cause i was paranoid - bought the iwc big pilot.  it also looked big enough on my wrist and felt i finally found a watch that matched my style
                                    …then i got the itch
bought a panerai radiomir, cause i was addicted, but then to justify it i put it on a brown strap so i could at least match (justifying the purchase in my brain)
then the radiomir runs fast... and it got annoying.  so i started to care about the mechanical aspect of the watch.
now i just want to get a nice two tone date just for a dress watch.  and then lastly i'll get a dive watch, cause technically i already have one and i cant really justify it.
...but when i do, i'll prob get either a fifty fathoms or a ploprof.

so.  i'll go all of em.  i think i got semi expensive taste, i like the fact that they're well made amazing machines (some more than others), which leads me to nice watches that i can subtly show off.

@bubbapest how do you find the accuracy of the IWC Big Pilot? I've heard that they don't keep time that well, and since you sound as OCD about that as I am.

Accuracy aside, I do like the 150th Anniversary Big Pilot's Big Date watch. It is a different movement to yours, though.

And the Big Pilot's Heritage 48 that they did last year.

If you're after the most accurate mechanical watch, I'd wait and see if Zenith make a production version of the Defy Lab. They did a very limited run of ten last year, and hopefully will make a production run in the near future. The oscillator originally ran at 15 Hz, buy apparently has now been overclocked to 18 Hz. I can think of a handful that run at 5 Hz, and fewer beyond that.

Get one in a two-tone case, and it might work as a dress watch. 😛

Ploprof versus Fifty Fathoms strikes me as a tough choice. Omega regulate their watches to tighter than Chronometer standards, so if accuracy is a big thing, then there's your answer.

i honestly havent really noticed the IWC losing that much time.  at least not nearly as much as i have the radiomir.  gotta set the radiomirs time i'd say like 1x a week and its off by 3 or so minutes/sometimes 5.  at least its fast and not slow though.

i do love the fact that its a 7 day power reserve (my radiomir is 8 days winding which is cool too).  i hate setting date complications, so if i wear my radiomir or just dont feel like wearing one i usually can keep the iwc set correctly and pick it up 5 days later.

I'd heard that Panerais could be inaccurate, but three to five minutes per week is terrible. Rolex's standard is +/- 2 seconds per day, or a worst case of 14 seconds out a week.

The long power reserve sounds cool. I'm into having one watch, so it wouldn't make much odds on an automatic, though it would save me winding a manual so often.
