Just a little addition: after my ride I had to take a detour where the road was muddy. Unfortunately my rear fender is very short, so quite a bit of the mud ended on the jacket. My son was behind me and ask: „Dad, do you feel cool today?“ I said „yeah, absolutely“! „Ok, then take a look at your jacket2.

But no worries-it has been washed and looks like new, so Thomas @tody will soon be able to take delivery of it in perfect condition!

@FlavourFade thanks a lot! It is from 1988 and I was lucky to buy it in 1991 near Kentucky. Since that time, I never had any technical problems with the bike

Soi it's a chore jacket, right? Off to the garage with it.
As some of you may now, my car enthusiasm came way before my IH addiction.

The cars do need a little more attention than my jeans, though.
Today's task was changing the rear wheel bearings on my falcon. As @GTPowers may confirm, this can be a daunting task when the bearings are frozen on the axle shaft.
Car is much quieter now. Still, the rear differential makes an ever so slight noise. That'll be a winter project, though.

@goosehd that is a kind of tough question - so far, i have kept them all, and they all have a unique story.

what I have learned in roughly 20 years of wrenching: bone stock ain't too bad.
tried to hop up my Mustang 6 cylinder engine and threw a whole bunch of parts at it. now i'm happy i found someone to do an engine/transmission swap with a while back, and i enjoy the stock engine with the manual transmission that does not have a synchronized first gear.

there are some that got away, but i'm not quite sure if that was too bad of a thing: a 1970 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler Super Cobra Jet. was in the middle of renovating a house at the time and did not have the funds. would probably have been a nightmare to restore, with super expensive parts. also: 1963 Mercury Meteor Station Wagon. was located in the US, but i just could not justify all the trouble of having it inspected and shipped over. was in nice condition, though.

currently, the Bronco is giving me headaches, to the point where i simply hate that thing. hastily rebuilt engine still makes a knocking sound, i will pull it over the winter and go through it again. and it's pulling badly to one side when braking, knocks the steering wheel a quarter of a turn to the driver side. have gone through everything at least 3 million times, can't find anything that is wrong with either brakes or suspension.

but that is kind of the whole story behind it: i'm completely self taught, and love what i do. my granddad would have been proud, he always saw me in the applied science/engineering field. but at least i know how stuff works, and i'm good at fixing things in general. gets you a long way in life.

@tody Awesome stories and insights!! Thank you for sharing 🙂

It’s funny how those opportunities pop up where you just don’t have the money and need to walk away. More than once I have been in those shoes and often think I was probably better off making the decision I needed to at the time. Probably…😂

I’m sure your granddad would be proud and looking down on you with a smile.

Does your son show any interest in wrenching with you? Have his eye on one of the cars? A buddy of mine has an older jeep which needs work that he’s giving to his teenage son. It will be his first car, but the deal is they have to fix it to get it back on the road.

I can’t think of many better ways than to share time with your kids, teach them something valuable, and hopefully make them appreciate what it all means down the road.

Appreciate the time! Thank you 🙏

@goosehd that is touching a very sensitive topic in this household: we're having a hard time with our son. difficult personality. unimaginably lazy. always complaining that the universe is giving him a hard time. not just the usual teenage stuff, something deeper, it has been going on for much longer. we do have professional help for this, but is incredibly exhausting.

our daughter on the other hand is the complete opposite. has an eye for how things work, and a very good understanding, too. if makita made a cordless drill in pink, it'd be the first thing she'd want to have for christmas. i guess she's the one i can pass all the knowledge to.
