This is a space to discuss all things design! I'm currently 3rd year Product Design student, and I'm delighted to talk about design with anyone who will listen 🙂

Here is some of my recent work. I'm designing a medication management system that's inspired by tube amplifiers. This particular product will have a companion app (which I'm also designing) and will have colored rings to indicate medication levels in the proprietary jars, and will have a medication reminder system that will be expressed with different colors and notifications. This is a really brief description of the project, and I'm happy to discuss it in more detail if anyone is interested.

Wish I had some background or tech knowledge to throw at this design…but I know what I like and this is cool looking!!

              That’s pretty cool @seawolf

Design thinking is taking over the realm of management and business strategy. Design is getting its due now because it’s so important.

This book is a great primer to anyone getting into the field or just interested in it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Design_of_Everyday_Things

              Think it, be it.

@Mizmazzle Human centered design is all about what works well for the user, so you have more knowledge than you think! This design is inspired by tube amplifiers, but based on user needs compiled through research. And one of the best parts about it, is the functionality. When the user gets a new medication, all they have to do is scan the QR code on the label (I also redesigned medication labels for this purpose), and the system is automatically populated with the dosing schedule, and the device will dispense the correct dose at the right time, on the right day, and at the right quantity. And if you feel like it, you can scan the QR code. It's functional. 😉

@mclaincausey Don Norman lives in San Diego, and I've met him several times at school! He has a really good relationship with our design department, so he's around a lot. Next time he's around I'm going to ask him to sign my copy of that book 🙂

Design thinking is super important, and it's not a skill that many people possess. This is why Don Norman says that when it comes to designing large systems, look to the designers. And he also says that designers are problem definers, not problem solvers which is what makes the design thinking you mentioned so important.

Some exciting news: I just accepted a part-time job at a design studio. So stoked to get my hands dirty and make some amazing stuff. The pay is shit, but it'll be an awesome block on my resume which will help me get my foot in the door somewhere else when I graduate next year.

Thanks! It's strange starting a new career. I went into the studio today to do the usual payroll onboarding stuff, and was surprised to learn that it's all digital now. Clocking into work is now done on an app. Wild! I haven't had a new job in over 20 years, so this is all very new to me.

About 6 years ago, I restored a mid-century chair for a client, and this was the result (see below). I really loved the chair and when I delivered it, I told my client that if she ever wanted to sell it, to please give me a call. Well, a couple of weeks ago she called, and I was able to buy the chair from her at a very reasonable price (just about what I charged her for the restoration), and now it's sitting in my living room!

I sure did! I cut off the original leather and made an exact pattern from it. I searched high and low for olive dye, but none were quite what I was looking for. I ended up learning how to mix my own dye, and managed to get this gorgeous color from a strange concoction of colors!
