@goosehd and we'll skip the asparagus and get straight to the wine, okay? 😊

@Chap your Laguiole put a smile on my face.

          Here’s mine, Laura’s, and her dad’s:

I thought @Anesthetist started a thread on interesting bottle openers, I couldn't find it.

on the controversial topic of white asparagus - please pair with Roero Arneis grape, like from Vietti for example...

            Tibaldi is another good choice…

Speaking if (recent) favourite wine bottles we had - went to Greece on vacation around 2014, visited a little wine shop in Athens, had boxes shipped to Berlin, forgot about it and let the bottles rot in the cellar.

Amazing entertainment in the company of friends (and food) in Scotland…

@foxy01 Accidentally aged wine is such a serendipitous joy - I got given a couple of bottles of cheap red blend that my gran had never got round to drinking since 2004, and drinking them in 2026 was amazing, really rich almost sherry like flavours from what would have probably been a very mediocre wine back in 2004.

Seems like you had a good time though! What was in the slow cooker?

Apologies - still have to sort out my login!

Had very mixed results with cheaper wines & vineyards. there is something to the processing that won't always allow significant improvements...
Had a fun experience when I had to convince my American wife that +10Y for a good Riesling is nothing.

turned out to be a revelation that one at the time - Clemens Busch drunk in 2018.

This one turned to sherry vinegar by 2023...

                      IMG_9517.jpeg

definitely works better with reds - whites and natural wines/orange wines are tricky, to say the least.

got a friend here on the island who is into Chateau Musar, so I brought my stash over - looking forward to cracking open that 1999 white sometime later this year with friends.

@FOXY Never had an aged Riesling myself but I do really like a nice mineraly Riesling so I am pretty jealous of that one 😃

Less jealous of the sherry vinegar...😅

I can imagine some of those '99s will be excellent, so hope you enjoy 🙂

The Alpha Reserve Old Vines is already pretty good upon release (after 4-5 years in a barrique) and from pretty old vines back then (80-90 years).
after another 10+ years bottled up in a cellar it got pretty close to some of the top Italian reds. unique grape variety as well.

I prefer the Alpha Reserve over their top tier release - much better value for money.

Good dry Rieslings can be amazing for the reasons you mentioned - crisp, mineral/minerality and the wet, damp stone cellars.
with some of the Ahr and Mosel GG's you can get some really big cinema if you let them sit for a decade or two. but those need some grape sugars to get there.

Good thing is that there are lots great, younger vineyards in Europe with decent bottles in the €10-20 price bracket.
The odd thing in the UK and Scotland is that I can’t find a decent wine shop or merchant - it’s terrible supermarket stuff or stiff-upper-lip, prestigious labels stuff only. Very little in between.
