      Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a new grey sweatshirt. I need your expert opinions please!

Which brands should I be considering/looking at?

So far I have UES & The Real McCoys shortlisted. Are there any others that are the leaders for quality, fit & look?

Thanks, hope you’re all having a great Christmas btw!

      Kurtis

I have RM, IH and Merz B. Schwanen. All are nice.

I got a 3 sixteen sweatshirt when I was in New York two weeks ago.  Not loop wheeled, but really nice.

Oh man, I've been on a real sweater kick so I've got some input.

The SOFTEST grey sweater that I have is by The Strike Gold.  Here it is on SE:  https://www.selfedge.com/strike-gold?product_id=813

I don't have the grey, but I have an oatmeal UES puca pucara and it's wonderful.  Here's the grey on R&H:  https://rivetandhide.com/ues-puca-pucara-loopwheeled-sweatshirt-grey.html

I have the black version of the Real McCoy's ballpark sweater.  It's not loopwheel but it's real meaty.
            Here's the grey on S&S:  https://standardandstrange.com/collections/knitwear/products/ball-park-12oz-crewneck-sweatshirt-medium-gray

I picked up the 3Sixteen heavyweight hoodie a few years back and it still gets a lot of use.  Here it is on SE:
            https://www.selfedge.com/sweaters-hoodies/3sixteen?product_id=1456

Some other brands that I haven't tried but have heard good things about include Merz B. Schwanen, Telegraph, Warehouse.

If you're looking for something a little less expensive but of good quality, American Giant and Reigning Champ also make pretty good stuff.  I have a couple of their sweaters that I use for working out and just hanging out.

            Hope that helps!

            Blanket-line all the things!!!

Make sure you pay attention to the length measurement.  Some Japanese brands are very short, which you may or may not like depending on your body type.

For example, I really loved the Strike Gold sweatshirt but it was almost a belly shirt on me.  Same with some of the old model IH sweatshirts.

Same here, especially after my wife boiled my IH zip to shrink it down so it would fit her  😃

I have the merz 12oz loopwheel in oatmeal and their 15oz 3s48 in a greyish merle and am very happy with both.  The 14.8oz sweatshirt, while loopwheel, does have sideseams if that's an issue for you.  I'd say overall the 12oz is softer and a little nicer feeling to wear, the 14.8 is woven tighter and feels a little coarser but more robust.  I don't have a pic of the oatmeal, but here's the grey when I got it.  Not home right now, so I could always snag some other pics

I would definitely recommend Loop & Weft Tompkins.  You can order from Okayama Denim and a few other spots online.  Crazy soft and fluffy.

Besides Merz and RMC I would look at Stevenson Overall, Freewheelers, Warehouse, IH (Obviously), and Studio D'Artisan's Suvin Gold sweatshirt.

Some will disagree with me but I would not put 3sixteen in the same category as any of the above.  You may save a few dollars going with the brand but the quality and construction are not equivalent to the above.

I have a RMC 10oz and a Merz, can say that both are fantastic. My Merz is just loopback on the inside, not brushed — the RMC is brushed and ridiculously soft. That particular one is in grey, and the texture of the heather is nice. I'd say overall it's on the lighter color side, less contrasty.

I've heard nothing but good things about the Strike Gold ones and would love to try one someday.

Also, not a sweatshirt per se, but these Stevenson guys are insanely soft. I can't recommend them enough — mine is maybe the most comfortable pullover I've ever worn.

🙂 I just wish they did them in more colours! I got a heather navy one recently which is lovely but I dream (futilely I suspect) of a deep bottle greeen

Came back to add that while I do agree that 3sixteen sweats are of a bit lesser quality, I have really enjoyed the few I have. Despite the fact that I've had a QC issue or two with a couple other items of theirs, I've never had any problems with my hoodies and crews — the indigo dyed fleece is especially soft, highly recommend that one if you're not looking to spend north of 200 bucks on a hoodie.

Really learning a lot from this thread and hoping to add a sweatshirt in this color soon. One I’ve seen a lot but not mentioned here is Buzz Rickson. Anyone have experience with their version?

An update from me - I bought the Rmc loopwheel and (surprisingly) was pretty underwhelmed. Fit for me wasn’t great and felt it was a bit short and overly boxy. While well constructed my immediate thought was that my sda Suvin golds were far more substantial, softer and a much better fit. I picked up the ues puca pucara which arrived today and it is fantastic and a much closer competitor to the sda. Nice fit (sda just shades it), plush soft and well made and constructed.

Which one did you snag, @Pete? I have the 9oz raglan sleeved and the 10oz full zip hoodie. The former is very fitted and just long enough in a L (I'm 6'6" and 190lbs) and the latter is oversized in an XL and I should have gone for a L tbh. Sorry it didn't work out for you! I keep hearing good things about the sweatshirts from SDA.

It was the loopwheel sweatshirt MC13111. It looks beautiful but just felt less substantial than I was hoping for. I don’t have any IH cut and sewn as a comparison but really love the suvin gold line from sda - I have several sweats and hoodies and also a fair few t shirts / henleys. Just a great weight and softness and fit works well - not oversized by any means but not skin tight either.

That one looks like it's the thickness of the 9oz I have. It's … kind of just a thick long-sleeved shirt that's rough on the inside lol. I like the 10oz much more. It's so, so soft and substantial. Then again, it's also hot as hell. Trade offs, right?

Picked up a Studio D’Artisan “Tsuri-ami” sweatshirt from Rivet & Hide last week and I’m really happy with it. Fit is snug (I’m hoping it loosens up just a bit with wear) but not tight.  I usually wear a large in most IH shirts and got a large in this as well. Fabric is super nice and heavy feeling, though I’m not sure about the actual weight of the fleece. Curious how this would compare to the Suvin Cotton version.  I’m happy and also very pleased with Rivet & Hide…awesome shop.  Grateful for this thread…it helped a ton with my search.
