I feel terrible self-centered and like I am hijacking this thread to suit my own benefit

Not at all mate. One of the reasons this forum is here is to share the wisdom and spread the joy.

      @orion213:

These are the only settings I can find on my machine that match what you suggest, can you confirm if these settings are suitable? Do I wash with detergent or none?

Based on that pic, I'm assuming you're in the US. Along with free health care one of the bonuses of living in Europe is programmable washing machines (jk  😉 )

I wouldn't use "Hot" as that may be a 80/90C wash which may kill the shirt. Try "Warm" first and "Low Spin". No detergent needed if it isn't dirty, although a little may help lubricate the threads.

When you take it out it will be quite wet. Put it on a hanger and give the sleeves a damn good stretch by holding the cuff at the seam on one end and the seam at the pit on the other. Do this every now and again on both arms as it will mitigate a little of the shrinkage in the sleeve.

Thank you greatly for the advice, it is in now as we speak, with your recommendation.

Unfortunately, the detergent comes in packets and isn't granular, so I went ahead and used none of it.

You are close, I live in Toronto, Canada! Free health care all around (although under the tyranny of liberalism at the moment), alas, no temperature control over our washing, a tough, but fair trade-up haha!

I will stretch it as you mentioned, and I will post measurements pre-wash and post-wash for documentation purposes.

No need to apologise. Opinions may differ, but if it were me, I’d start with warm/no spin and see where you end up. You can always go back and blast it with a hotter wash, but no vice Verda. I’m hindsight Reuben’s right about sleeve length, so I’d start cautiously and get progressively more extreme 🙂

I appreciate all your advice, did not forget about you (: I think with the added stretching of the fabric after a hot wash, this could speed up/negate the shrinkage and get me wearing it faster as I am anxious to wear it today haha.

I hot wash and run my UHFS through the dryer all the time. I wouldn't worry too much about messing them up. My oldest and most favorite UHF has been hot washed and ran through the dryer probably fifty times  🙂

I do this to shrink the cuffs and sleeve length. And they can be stretched back out a little in whatever measurements you have are too small. I usually have to stretch out the ptp and waist area…

I missed a XL in the first drop, then the second. Miraculously though I found the possibly only XL to make to a retail outlet in Australia - URAHARA in Melbourne. It's my first workshirt, and the cut suits me far more than the western I reckon. Bloody lovely this shirt.

                  pre-wash measurements (taken by IH):
                  Shoulder: 18.2"
                  Length: 28.7"
                  P2P - 22.0"
                  Waist: 21.2"
                  Opening: 21.6"
                  Sleeve: 26.0"

                  post-wash measurements:
                  Shoulder: 17.8"
                  Length: 28.5"
                  P2P - 21.8"
                  Waist: 20.7"
                  Sleeve: 25.9"

Looks like minimal shrinkage as we are starting low and going slow (with a warm water low cycle soak).

I think it fits me quite well now, not sure if any further intervention into shrinkage is needed, if anything, it's just the backside that has extra material, but I don't think there's anything wash-wise that can help with that.

Gotta say I am completely satisfied with this garment, absolutely in love with it.

@neph93 Curious to know your thoughts and if you would continue to wash or leave as is, and thank you for all the recommendations thus far!

@orion213 not withstanding the difference in lighting and camera angle, I’d say that was a marked improvement. The shorter length and slightly slimmer fit look very good on you.

The roomy backs on IH shirts is pretty standard. It is a design feature, more or less. I stopped fretting about it a long time ago. IMHO, you’ve done good work and should leave it where it is.

Looking at these dims again and the new measurements (minor/negligible shrinkage), don’t seem to meet up with the changed fit. Maybe the better lighting in the pics? Maybe a little bit was all you needed?

Either way, there is more shrinkage to be had if you want, but I’ll stick with my original recommendation to leave it where it is now.

Hey @neph93 , Thanks for taking more time into the analysis. I never measured the shirt when I got it (*in all fairness), I just took IH's word on it as they are the experts, however, I have posted the pics below of how I measured the post-wash, maybe I am not doing it the IH way and that is where the shortcomings are? I am in no way, shape or form great at measuring at this level of accuracy if it's any constellation.

However, I do agree, more shrinkage is definitely left in this shirt.

Hi Giles, thanks for the feedback. I will remeasure the shoulders and the waist and see if there is a significant difference. I did get exact measurements for the shirt I received from Graham.

Definitely, I am completely smitten with the shirt overall, I think it was a great choice for a first work shirt and the IH crew was amazing with finding me this size.

When I wash it again in a long time, I will see how the P2P/waist shrinks, with being conscious to stretch the sleeves as you mentioned seemed to really help.
