I rolled my eyes at Folk Songs' title . What do I know.

Any Japanese written whodunnits, You will learn a lot about social structure and behaviour. I wish I have read them 25 years ago.....

Interesting, @Giles - any titles you would suggest?

I enjoyed Tokyo Vice the TV series, I thought they balanced the social aspects of Japanese censorship on reality rather well and impressed they were allowed to film such a series in Tokyo.

I urge you to read this. I can't start to explain how brilliant this book is. It made me laugh, cry and wonder in equal measure. It is not just an account of Shackleton's failed attempt at crossing Antartica and the unbelievable rescue of his men, but in many ways, a lesson for life. I have learned so much (and bored the arse out of P, as I insist on reading parts out to her all the time). Read it, and I think you'll thank me.

@Giles ordered. Will spend Xmas on a small remote Island in the North Sea. Sounds like a perfect book to read there...

I chatted to a couple of German friends here (the dive masters and the reason we came to this resort). They found it difficult to read, and gave up, they said that the English was too difficult for them. I told them to try harder 🙂

I don't know this one (on finding the ship) , but there are lots of good books on Shakleton and the Endurance trip. For those who haven't read any I would recommend Shakleton's own description. Here in a German version with a foreword by Reinhold Messner:

One of the interesting discussions in Finding Endurance is the authors analysis of the difference in character/motivation between Scott and Shackleton. That Scott played a finite game, and Shackleton an infinite game.... Not that I knew what either were 2 days ago......

Haven't heard of the terms before, but the outcomes of both expeditions explain the meaning.
