Luggage Bags and Packs
-
@Graeme yeah. It was me being OCD/completionist. I have the big version and carry large loads in it and have not felt I needed it. I don’t even miss load lifters.
-
I have something neat coming this week from Alpine Luddites and I’m pretty excited about it
-
Looks kinda cool. Is the YKK magnetic stuff just their answer to Fidlock? Sounds like it. Side note Fidlocks bike phone mounts are pretty interesting. Work quite well! Magnetism and suction.

@mclaincausey I liked the last iteration of the Matador and Carryology collaboration, but I didn't end up buying anything. This one seems to be using a more technical fabric, and it'll probably be more expensive as a result.
One thing that feels like a regressive step is that the previous generation positioned the side handles so that they could be used as a luggage pass-though. The new one has a separate piece of webbing down the back.
The MAG-HOOK was used in the first version of the collection. In fact, the paragraph has been copied and pasted between the two articles!
-
@Graeme hah. The… talkative… copywriters took a shortcut eh?
My Dragonfly is Ultra and an Ultra based stretch fabric. Really great stuff.
-
@mclaincausey they used their entire quota of words for the year, and they were forced to recycle their old prose.
I've heard good things about Ultra.
I'm tempted by the range as it might be good for weight-constrained carry-on. Some of the airlines have a 7 kg (15 lbs) or 10 kg (22 lbs) weight limit for cabin baggage, and a sub half kilo (or pound) bag eats less of that allowance.

After 6 months, the eagle has landed!!
Alpine Luddites is a one man, bag making machine in Vermont who specializes in crafting replicas of 60s, 70s, and 80s Alpine bags. My bag is a recreation of the Chouinard Creat Duhb or Black Crag. It wears as well as I hoped and will def get a lot of love. See the original below (Alpine Luddite’s pic)
Cant wait to travel with her!
The neighbors said they’ve never seen such a nice bag.

@Anesthetist I like your neighbours
-
@goosehd they’re quiet but always hungry

Ty @Graeme
I might have to see the new matadors but was a little disappointed in the last run. For a bag billed to be highly water resistant, it just isnt that great. The back panel is also sticky and hot.
-
@Anesthetist the write-up on Carryology said that the new version has a mesh back. This was present on the first version but absent from the second. I don't know how breathable it will be.
-
@Graeme will have to give it a look.
I have to admit….I might have too many packs….
-
@Anesthetist I have two rucksacks, my old Verbockel and a Loyal Stricklin, and I consider that too many!
I'm tempted by the Matador collaboration too, but I'm not sure if I'll get one.
-
@Anesthetist good shout. If they aren’t seam sealing and patterning for water resistance, it doesn’t matter how water resistant the materials are.
I gotta say though, I do like Ultra. Dyneema has an appeal that to me is a bit more aesthetic and more organic. Ultra has a tech appeal: robust, light, and stiff, and it looks it. The stiffness can be good or bad depending on how the bag is designed and materials used.
-
@Graeme i dont want to admit how many I have
-
@tody I mainly liked the simple look of the one bag I bought, not sure about the backpacks etc. The material is really cool with a lot of texture, but the bags are otherwise very simple (e.g. there is no contouring in the lid, so in heavy rain any laptop etc is exposed from the gaps where the strap is attached). I actually bought a small purse from the (off) white material and like it quite bit.

@Anesthetist awesome lookin bag
