I got slammed on a purchase (NOT from IHUK) about a month ago. Bought gear from the states as it's the only North American dealer for items that were made in Japan. Canada customs nailed me to the wall....

      Edit for clarification:

I live in Canada and had purchased fishing equipment from a US distributor. When Canada customs processed the package, I paid dearly when it was imported to me.

All of my future US purchases will be on hold for the time being.

@goosehd I recently went down to pickup a package also not from Iron Heart at my (now defunct) US mailbox, was some beer that I had shipped up from Seattle, got a very stern lecture from the customs person upon returning about how badly they could ding me but they were being lenient with monetary consequences and just offering lectures for anyone going down to buy things right now.

I would suspect that DHL just doesn't even want to deal with having to collect tariffs or duties on packages they are delivering, so many packages will be rejected by the recipient due to tariffs that they will have a build up of packages that they will have to store somewhere so better to just get ahead of it and block any that has potential to be rejected by the recipient

@Ikeaparty yea this seems to be partially it as I read more. Also seems like the amount of paperwork is higher. Also the queue for items over $800 is building up on the US side so packages are getting “delayed.” DHL was always the quickest from me from overseas so it’s a bummer from that perspective. So maybe they don’t want to seem like the culprit for delays from image perspective as well.

Will be interesting to see how it affects US shipping companies, in the town right across the border from Vancouver, Blaine, they had had a bunch of mailbox services shut down or reduce hours as it no longer makes sense for Canadian's to ship stuff down there to pick it up. I used to just stockpile record orders at mine and go down every couple months and pick them up because it was often free shipping in the US but expensive to ship to Canada

I’d like to thank Iron Heart UK for making the shipping process super easy. So glad to have found you guys 🙂

Although I buy the odd item from US based retailers and manufacturers, it’s always irked me to have to pay import fees etc. not their fault, just the way it is, but it’s definitely a turn off.

if you want a fun read on tariffs I can highly recommend the German customs website. Fun fact: all orders from non-EU countries with a value of goods exceeding €150 are subject to tariffs. And VAT is charged either way

@jfk1117 Canada’s de minimis is $20 CAD. Almost everything we purchase has taxes and duties applied.

Canada responded to the US tariffs by implementing counter tariffs which has made things worse for Canadian consumers buying goods originating from the US.

This is not the same as it would be for US customers buying goods from Canada. I do not know how US customers are currently being affected.

Edit correction: “Under CUSMA, Canada has agreed to maintain a de minimis threshold of at least CAD$150.00 for customs duties, and CAD$40.00 for taxes, at the time or point of importation of goods shipped by courier from the United States or Mexico. There are otherwise no changes to Canada’s existing de minimis framework. Accordingly, postal shipments from the U.S. or Mexico, as well as any courier or postal shipments from any other country, will continue to have a customs duty and tax remission threshold value of up to CAD$20.00. Please note that the new thresholds will apply as of the date the CUSMA enters into force and, for greater clarity, time of importation means the time of release.” - taken from CBSA

Heck @goosehd, I send a pair of used jeans to a friend in Canada about a year ago and he called me to tell me he had to pay some kind of tax. I was shocked!

@goosehd thanks. Yea I’m most curious of someone US based going over the de minimus of $800 from ihuk and how / if they were impacted.

We have never had to deal with it much in the US. I’ve only paid once in my entire life across clothing / furniture etc. so very curious as a big buck is on the horizon for me.

@yannis When I participated in the Mad Red jacket tour, I got hit in $60CAD taxes because of the way the customs form was filled out. I should have had the foresight to warn the sender on how to fill out the form.
