Interesting to know: Haraki-san actually suggests wearing Primaloft directly over a short- or long-sleeved T-Shirt to achieve optimal heat-retention. So your experience matches pretty well with his suggestion. I'm willing to try doing the same with my IHJ-79 sometime ❄and coming from that which is already very functional, I can only imagine how much warmer the IHJ-75 must be

@cityofdelusion I wore a UHF under the jacket yesterday and after about 10 minutes into my hike, I was burning up lol.

@Brandrea Thanks Brian! At the moment its my most versatile jacket. The temperature range that it covers is unrivaled compared to everything else that IH or many top outdoor brands have to offer.
One more thing about the humidity control. Please try it with woolen base layer...
Its almost unbelievable how well it will transfer the sweat outside the jacket given how well insulated it is.

I decided late last winter to get one of these, but of course, by then there were none to be had. I grabbed one this time around and finally had some bitter cold weather to test it out. It's amazingly warm without the need for massive layers underneath, but it's still not overly bulky. The zipper was a little sticky, but some zipper lube has helped. It's an investment, but so far the performance is impressive.

@Karol thanks so much for that link, appreciated!

Yes, at times I find I’m cooking in this jacket … but with temps here in the negative C low teens, high 20’s, I’m certainly not complaining!

Sounds like this layer you wear helps with the heat transfer. Sometimes my sleeves get “wet” feeling when I just wear a tee.

@Brandrea woolen base layer will help in heat and especially moisture transfer. I love all my cotton stuff (the thicker the better) but the reality is that 100% cotton is a terrible idea when it comes to physical activity. It simply does not dry quick enough and the moisture is building up, and when you take a break it starts to deprive the body from heat. With enough time and negative temperature = hypothermia.

I have a question for those who have this and/or ideally also the IHJ-79 to compare this jacket with. Replies by the IH crew are also very welcome, and I'm posting this here in case anyone else has this question in the future.

I'm considering getting the new iteration of this jacket (IHJ-138-BLK) if the measurements play along.

I'm thinking that the only jacket I can compare this jacket and its measurements to (in terms of it being a technical jacket with synthetic fabric) is the IHJ-79.

I tried the IHJ-79 in size small once, and the armpit, upper arm to sleeve was very tight (slim fit) even with only a thin t-shirt. That was the only reason why I sized up to a size medium at the time.

Question: Is the armpit, upper arm to sleeve on this jacket also tight/slim fit, similarly to the IHJ-79? If yes, I'd have to size up which is not ideal for me, since then the sleeve length and overall length would be too long. Ideally, I'd like to be able to move freely and comfortably while wearing this jacket with either a t-shirt and a mid to heavyweight wool pullover or an IH hoodie underneath or sometimes even just a T-Shirt without swimming in the jacket.

@cityofdelusion I think comparing one, two, or three products to each other with the one not being released yet is pure speculation at this point. Your best bet will be to wait until the IHJ-138 is released and compare those measurements to ones that do work for you. You might even try isolating the measurement that doesn't work for you and asking the IHUK crew to measure a jacket with a measurement in mind that will work.

Edit: I see the measurements have been released for the IHJ-138. How do these measurements look for you?

I'm not comparing any product that is not released yet or speculating. I'm asking if anyone who owns the IHJ-75 (which the IHJ-138 obviously is based on) thinks that the armpit hole width/upper arm to sleeve areas are tight/slim fit - based on their own, personal real-life experience. That is, among other reasons, why I asked my question here, and not in the dedicated thread of the upcoming IHJ-138.

The reason why I'm specifically saying "(...)those who have this [IHJ-75] and/or ideally also the IHJ-79 to compare this jacket [IHJ-75] with" is because if that someone owns an IHJ-79, they might be familiar with the phenomenon of the IHJ-79 having slim fit arms and compare the two in a way that I would be able to understand the fit a little better. Even though the two jackets have a different thickness and there are other factors that might lead to the two jackets having totally different fits in the said areas, the answer to my question would give me a little more information on the fit of this jacket than the one I have at hand currently, which is none.

Moreover, I'm not able to compare my ideal measurements in terms of the armpit hole width or the width of the upper arm to sleeve areas, because these measurements aren't part of the measurement table. For this, I would have to ask the crew (I already emailed the crew yesterday after the measurements of the IHJ-138 were published, giving them my ideal measurements regarding other areas such as the sleeve length, overall length and chest width, which they can use to hopefully, as a first step, find the "ideal" jacket in my tag size. My next step then will be to, based on the "ideal" jacket that was found, ask for the specific armpit width/arm width measurements. But even then, one wouldn't be able to simply compare the ideal armhole width/upper arm width measurement between jackets anyway. That's why I'm interested in the comparison between the IHJ-79 and IHJ-75: Because I own the IHJ-79, I'd be able to make an educated guess on whether the IHJ-138 has a similar slim fit in the arms based on the experiences that others have made with the IHJ-75 which is similar to the IHJ-138.

Hence, I'm asking if those who own the IHJ-75 (which, as said, the IHJ-138 is based on) generally perceive or feel that the said areas as slim fit or not. Better yet, if they also own an IHJ-79, they would be able to compare (e.g., stating that the IHJ-75 is as slim in those areas as the IHJ-79 or roomier). In other words: If someone who owns an IHJ-79 were to be able to say that the IHJ-75 has a roomier upper arm area, I'd know that I won't have a problem like I did with the IHJ-79 where I had to size up for the arm width, "sacrificing" other measurements that were ideal for me.

Not looking for a discussion here. Just trying to get as much "real-life" information as possible to make the best decision that I can before buying an expensive jacket like this that I cannot return if it ends up not fitting as well as I want it to. I know well enough to contact the crew via email and ask my question that way and I have done so already and will continue to do so. But as said, I'm looking to get more information from as many people who own the IHJ-75 as possible on the one hand and on the other hand, for other people who might be looking into getting this (IHJ-75) or the IHJ-138 benefiting from my specific, but in my opinion useful, fit-related question. That, for me at least, is the purpose of product threads on this forum. If the worst that will happen is that I don't get any answers, because the parameters aren't comparable or my question is stupid, then it will be yet another unanswered or misunderstood, too specific and seemingly "odd" question that I asked many times before on this forum. But I still want my question to be out there without having to explain in length why it makes sense to me to ask, even if it may not make any sense to others.

@cityofdelusion I get you. I’ve purchased and returned a few iHJs that measurements alone didnt tell me they were ultimately too tight through upper pits and across upper back. I wonder if that is from the placement of tge armholes relative shoulder dimensions? I dont know the reason but it doesnt happen with me with buying ihsHs.

regardless, I dont know the ans to what you’re asking. New iteration of this jacket looks great. 👍Ive got this in Medium in the first iteration(IHJ-39). It dont have the problem i describe above. sizing sometiimes can feel like rolling the dice

@cityofdelusion in my experience the Mountain Parka is generally roomier, wouldn't struggle to get it on with a UHF underneath for example, or notice the armpit/holes being restrictive

@AdamJ Thank you for sharing. Shaun was super helpful today and we mailed back and forth a few times regarding the measurements of a size XS and S (IHJ-138).

Here are my thoughts in short: the XS has the chest and opening width of most jackets that I wear (leather jackets, denim jackets, etc.) and would be better in terms of overall length and sleeve length also as the latter two measurements are closer to what I wanted originally.

However, while the S has approx. the same chest width as my IHJ-79 (1cm larger than my IHJ-79, which is nice since its probably thicker than my IHJ-79) and a slightly roomier opening, the overall length (ca. 2cm longer than the XS) and sleeve length (ca. 1cm longer than the XS) might be annoying, especially given that my IHJ-79 has a slightly longer sleeve than what I want (compared to the size S IHJ-138, my IHJ-79 is ca. 1cm longer in the sleeve).

Edited to add: Shaun also (once again, thank you for going the extra mile here!) measured the arm hole opening, the biceps area and the elbow area. The XS is closer to my IHJ-79 here and the S has slightly more room.

I know that these are super fine grained details, but I need to make sure that I'll enjoy this jacket for a long while 🙂

@AdamJ I was thinking that the XS might be rather too snug when layering with a thick wool pullover or IH hoodie underneath, for example and that the S would, while being longer in the overall length and sleeve length, be a little more accommodating in the chest and overall fit. I'm probably making it more complicated than it has to be, since I'm trying to get the nuances right 😅

I know that heat retention and "how warm is X" is extremely relative from one person to the next, but I couldn't envisage it being particularly comfy or necessary to wear an IH Hoodie beneath, your movement would be restricted for sure! Just my two cents, obviously wear it how you wish.

I understand what you're saying, hard to find that balance between having enough room, but not ending up with too much

I would personally go for the M (but would generally not have anything bulky underneath it)

I understand what you're saying, hard to find that balance between having enough room, but not ending up with too much

                                            Nailed it! 🙂

Personally, most jackets don't keep me warm enough in the peak winter time (and I really hope this will based on all the positive reviews I read). But I also don't want to wear something too lightweight beneath the jacket and then having to freeze my a** off in the office, when I take it off 😆
