What's the durability like on the brown version of this jacket? Does it require lots of special care or can it be used daily and still look good? I just bought the black horsehide version of this jacket and looking for other Iron Heart jackets that have long sleeves as I have long arms. The other models of leather jackets seem to have shorter sleeves and there is a brown XL available at a store that I could order.

If anyone has both the black horsehide Type III and this one in the same size, do you find the fit is the same on them?

@neph93 hey buddy. When you bought your split steer did you go with your normal UHF size? I’m wondering if the thickness of the hide makes up for some of the larger measurements like shoulder. For example, I like an 18” shoulder in my shirts. Would a 19” shoulder in this jacket be countered by the thickness of leather at all?

@Mizmazzle not Neph, but I take L/XL in UHFs and felt kinda swamped by the Split Steer XL.

Gonna be a matter of personal preference, but looking at the chart I feel like this has been sized with consideration for the heft of the fabric in mind.

@T4920 thanks Tom. That’s what I was kinda figuring. Thick leather requires a bit of length/ width to make up for the heft and allow better movement.

@Mizmazzle My UHF’s are all XXL so when I spotted a brown split steer on eBay for a bargain price in XXL I jumped on it and I have to say i completely agree with @T4920 i felt a little swamped in it. I could have maybe made it work, especially at the price but I guess the fact I quickly resold it and am now waiting for a re-stock to pay full price and go a size down to an XL tells you what you need to know? And is also a testament to the quality/beauty of this jacket, it is stunning…

@DeeDee85 yeah interesting. That’s kinda the exact situation I’m in. I’m a size large in my UHF. Have a shot to buy a size large, but feel like the shoulder to sleeve combo is going to be too long. But also not sure if the thickness of the leather would take some of the shoulder width. Sounds like you found it to be too big in your normal size and need to size down. Perhaps waiting is the best plan for me too

@Mizmazzle yeah I can also remember the sleeves were definitely long. My thoughts at the time were pretty much “this jacket is amazing, I’d much rather have it a bit more fitted and conforming to my body shape as it softens up” the XXL was definitely doable for me too by the way if I’d have been looking for a more vintage boxy fit. I was blown away by the leather and the weight of the thing, what a jacket! My impatience for the re-stock has me looking at the tea core horse hide type 3 but I always wonder whether I can pull off the shininess 😂

I take XL in most shirts but I'm closer to an XXL than an L, if you see what I mean. I have this in XL and it strikes the perfect balance. I can wear on or two layers under it. Another thing is that this jacket is considerably more robust than a denim type III, even a 21oz one. Thick, felled leather, and a lining, give it more bulk and structure. All in all, sizing down from shirt tag will likely be an error in most cases.

Thanks fellas. All this advice has been heeded and greatly appreciated. I came upon a deal on a new, black, size large I could not pass up. I’ve been waffling for the last couple weeks and finally pulled the trigger in the wee hours of the night.

(Keep yours eyes peeled on the buy/sell thread for some new closet clearing posts to balance the universe for this purchase)

I can’t wait to see what this jacket feels like in hand. I’ve read every post in this thread thrice! But I still feel like I’m going to be completely surprised once I put it on for myself.

I have two of the furriest fur balls on the planet. Is this jacket a dog hair magnet? Being black and all…

@Mizmazzle I don't think so, or at least more than anything else that's black....the cowhide has a nice texture to it that might be more easily brushed off than something like suede.

But I don't have a furry dog to test this out with so someone may correct me!

@Mizmazzle Yes but only because I'm opting for the sheepskin which fits me and fits in with my wardrobe better. Though I now have them side by side and it's extremely hard to not envy the rugged/heft of the steer. One of the best made pieces of anything I've ever encountered.

As long as it fits you, you can't go wrong with either one.

Hard to illustrate without feeling them since the only difference really is the material (the sizing is ever so slightly different but I think mainly the sleeves are shorter on the sheep and then the other fit differences are just from the thickness/pliability of the material).

As you’ll see when you get your steer, it’s pretty beefy. Total tank that will last forever. The sheep skin is more akin to regular suede. Definitely well made and not something you need to baby but I don’t think it’s something I would be able to just absent mindedly wear without being conscious of taking care of it either. Whether that’s the rain, spilled drinks on a bar table, or dirt/grime.

The steer also has a bit more of a shape/structure to it due to the leather, whereas the suede will be softer/more like a shirt jacket in drape. I think the difference here is purely a matter of preference, with the steer definitely more befitting of the biker/trucker aesthetic. I also think the steer will soften and wear in quite a bit over time and only improve with age but the suede might just stay as is for better or worse.
