I agree with the sizing for shirts/jackets. I have some shirts I hardly wear (short arms, huge chest even in size L, and I normally wear xl to xxl), but a black mackinaw vest that gets a lot of wear, and occasionally wear my blue/black Mackinaw cruiser (again: body too wide, arms too short and wide open below).
What gets a lot of wear is caps. Picture below shows my favorite on the left in tin cloth (but got eaten by a hand-luggage security scanner at Frankfurt Airport.. now has black marks all over it).. The red cap is a bit too MAGA and has a too steep profile for my liking.

Too good to not be shared 😀 , this is such an iconic item. Found this on swedish auction site Tradera. Seen these on Ebay for like 5-800 USD. Unfortunately it's to small for me 😞 , 49cm p2p according to seller. Only shipping within Sweden though.
Could be a bargain, or not...

I’ve been a huge Filson fanboy for many years. I find it increasingly difficult to shop there anymore though. Pretty much everything is now made overseas and still commands a premium price. I will continue to enjoy my made in USA items like the tin cruiser and mackinaw cruiser but probably won’t shop there anymore. It’s a shame. But… it’s more Iron Heart bucks now 🙂

I’m also generally a fan of filson but every now and then you get crap like this. I’m still trying to get this refunded but the customer service hasn’t been great either.

Yeah, product and service have been steadily declining for 10 years since the takeover.

Comparing a 15 year Tin Cruiser compared to a recent one you think they are from different planets. Now they stopped making them. Same with Red Wing boots and so many others.

Just happy that IH continues to do what they do.

I have several pre-buyout Filson pieces and they are awesome. The luggage is esp. good. It is sad what has happened to one of my all time favorite brands ☹️

I'm somehow hooked on to their designs on some of their bags. I own now 4 pieces of Filson luggage out of which only one is MiUS. The rest comes from Vietnam I guess, but I cannot find any flaws so far on the quality. Clothing quality might differ, but the luggage is impeccable.

A question for those that own a mackinaw cruiser: Since the jacket doesn't have any lining, wind penetrates right through it and it gets super cold at temperatures lower than 0°C. How do you keep your jacket windproof and warm? Do you wear some type of windproof lining underneath? Do you have any "ultimate" layer in mind that would protect from wind and keep warm at subzero temperatures when wearing a mackinaw cruiser?

@cityofdelusion I find the cruiser not very functional in really cold and windy weather and wear it only occasionally when its not really cold. I would wear this on a cool summer evening around the firepit in the garden for example. The boxy and relatively short cut, combined with the lack of any way to tighten or close the opening makes it easy for wind and cold to come in from underneath. Any way I can see would be to wear long warm wool sweater underneath also to get a tighter fit.

Personally, I didn't understand this jacket at all until living in the climate where it was invented. The lack of wind proofing is really a feature since it usually isn't too windy here and the biggest issue is humidity and breathability. It's also intended as work clothing which assumes you are moving and generating heat/sweat. Personally, wool like this is about the only thing I've found that works to keep me warm and not uncomfortably sweaty when I'm moving in the pnw. All the fancy tech fabrics that worked for me in CO are semi useless when I start working or exerting.

But yes, if being worn more casually, it usually only needs a base layer (thermal) and mid layer (uhf) to be warm enough.

@pechelman You are right on with your command. I wear mine for taking down trees and clearing trails in the winter. When it is under -10 C the air is dry and it is rarely windy. Tech fibers don't work when exercising in the cold ( < -10C), simple physics.

It’s a fine jacket and I appreciate it for what it is but yeah when the wind is howling you will def feel it. I wore mine to the farm once for Christmas and the wind coming off the fields rendered it about as good as a handkerchief.

I find the mac cruiser fairly wind resistant. All the pockets mean it’s basically double layer thick wool. Certainly not n1, but plenty warm for me on all but coldest/stormiest days. If you did a light puffy, uhf, moleskin, or even some denim/duck under it I think you’d have pretty warm setup.

@Dmart I own that vest. I love it. I wear it mostly with a hoodie or flannel underneath. Sometimes just a T-shirt and if I just running out the door and it’s handy and not too cold. I have a small and it’s perfect. I am 5’7” 175, 43” chest, top heavy from the gym… I wear mostly Large in IH, but my westerns are now too snug since the gym metamorphosis. Hahaha. It’s a problem I’m happy to have.
I digress… the small is what I’d consider a normal Large to be. Maybe a medium plus.
Also please note, the insulation is soft and but “puffy”. It really is a formidable vest and not figure-hugging.

I am 5'11" but rather slim and narrow 155lbs, 39.5 chest. I was initially thinking of a size M but maybe S could fit me as well.
I wear my IH Westerns mostly size M, some in large.
