@WhiskeySandwich So how does it ride with the 6 overs and lowered rear? Looks cool but still wonder about handling.

Realized I didn't exactly answer the question: it handles surprisingly well. Very planted in the corners, super predictable, given the road surface is smooth. I've scraped in corners but it's a bit sketchy. Hit a bump wrong and the whole rear will skip to the outside. Then again, I find that suspended bikes can have a bit of a floaty nature in corners sometimes especially if speed varies, which can buck you funny. IDK, its just something you get comfortable with.

I play it safe these days, can’t huck or send it like I used to could. Kids keep me in check. Will say though, a pothole on the hardtail is about the same as any lowered bike. And that’s coming from a dude with herniated disc.

I wanted a hardtail for my sporty since I still have a Softail with airride. A friend of mine told me to try a hardtail first before I make the step. My sporty still has a suspension ✌️

I’d say they refined the design the later you go but they’re all pretty much the same. we’re working on a chop on my buddys 99 and it’s pretty smooth so far. If you have a good carb and the thing isn’t a basket case anything can be reliable with the right tlc.

@Autorotate sorry to rant but I could talk about this stuff for days! That year range you’re looking at is good and simple because they’re all carbs and on the rigid mounts. After that the frames changed to rubber mounted engines and a few years later they added fuel injection. This makes it a lot harder to do the old school, simple machine thing. Also seeing as they ditched the evo motor for the new liquid cooled one, I’d say get what you can because they’ll only get harder to find and more expensive.

@WhiskeySandwich i am picking up what you’re laying down!! Love it. Yes, I only want a carb bike. So much more simple. One of my favorite bike maintenance chores is carb rebuilding/tuning. I’m no pro, but I like the research, the tools, the fine tooth adjustments with jets and the settings, etc. once it’s dialed, forget about it!

The 97 I’m interested in is bright blue over chrome. She’s good looking for sure.
